Khamenei Names Successor Candidates:

Amid the most intense attacks on Iran since the 1980s, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has gone underground, operating from a secure bunker as Israeli strikes devastate Tehran. Suspicious of electronic surveillance and infiltration, Khamenei has suspended digital communications, relying on a trusted aide to liaise with military and political commanders.

In a highly unusual move, he has prepared for the possibility of his own assassination by submitting three names to the Assembly of Experts as potential successors. This is a rare preemptive step aimed at ensuring a swift transition and preserving the Islamic Republic’s stability in wartime. Notably, his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, long rumored to be a possible heir, is not among them.

Khamenei has also appointed backups down the military chain of command to maintain continuity as Israeli strikes have wiped out several top commanders. Iran, according to officials, is focused on three priorities: shielding its leadership, bracing for possible U.S. entry into the war, and preventing further infrastructure sabotage by covert Israeli operatives believed to be active inside the country.

Statement issued by Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs following an attack by Israel:

MFA Statement on the Zionist Regime’s Military Aggression Against Iran

In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Noble People of Iran,
Fellow Iranians,

Our beloved homeland, Iran, has been unjustly attacked by a criminal and evil regime.

This morning, the occupying and rogue violated the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of our dear , attacking several locations, including residential areas in Tehran and other cities across our country. As a result, a number of the noblest and most patriotic servants of the nation – those who defended Iran’s dignity, sovereignty, and advancements in science and technology – along with other innocent civilians, were martyred.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extends its congratulations and condolences to the Revered Leader and the noble people of Iran on the martyrdom of these defenders and servants of the homeland, who sacrificed their lives for our nation in the face of the Zionist regime’s unforgivable crime.

The Zionist regime’s attacks on Iran constitute a violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and a blatant act of aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran. In accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, Iran reserves the legitimate and legal right to respond to this aggression. The Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate to defend Iran’s sovereignty with full strength and in the manner they deem appropriate.

As a founding member of the United Nations – an organization whose very purpose is to prevent aggression, breaches of peace, and threats to peace – the Islamic Republic of Iran underscores the Security Council’s obligation to take immediate action against this violation of international peace and security, stemming from the Zionist regime’s blatant aggression. We call upon the President and members of the Council to act without delay in this regard.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs further reminds the United Nations Secretary-General of his duties under the UN Charter and demands his immediate intervention in this matter.

We expect all member states of the United Nations, particularly regional and Islamic countries, members of the Non-Aligned Movement, and all governments that value international peace and security, to swiftly condemn this criminal aggression and take urgent and collective measures to counter this reckless adventurism, which has undeniably placed global peace and security under unprecedented threat.

The grave and far-reaching consequences of the Zionist regime’s aggression against our beloved homeland, Iran, will rest entirely upon this regime and its supporters.

The Zionist regime’s acts of aggression against Iran could not have been carried out without the coordination and approval of the United States. Consequently, the US government, as the primary patron of this regime, will also bear responsibility for the dangerous repercussions of the Zionist regime’s reckless actions.

ICC ISSUES ARREST WARRANTS TO ISRAEL PRIME MINISTER AND HIS FORMER DEFENSE MINISTER:

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants Thursday for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Israel’s war against Hamas militants in Gaza.

In a statement on its website, the ICC said the warrants charge each man with the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare, along with crimes against humanity including murder, persecution and other inhumane acts.

The warrants cover acts committed from “at least 8 October 2023 until at least 20 May 2024, the day the Prosecution filed the applications for warrants of arrest.”

Israel is not a member of the ICC, and Netanyahu and Gallant do not face any immediate risk of prosecution. But the threat of arrest could create issues if either man travels abroad.

PM BENJAMIN NETANYAHU DISBANDS WAR CABINET:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dissolved the six-member war cabinet, an Israeli official said on Monday, in a widely expected move that came after the departure from government of the centrist former general Benny Gantz.

Netanyahu is now expected to hold consultations about the Gaza war with a small group of ministers, including Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer who had been in the war cabinet.

The prime minister had faced demands from the nationalist-religious partners in his coalition, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, to be included in the war cabinet, a move which would have intensified strains with international partners including the United States.

The forum was formed after Gantz joined Netanyahu in a national unity government at the start of the war in October and also included Gantz's partner Gadi Eisenkot and Aryeh Deri, head of the religious party Shas, as observers.

Gantz and Eisenkot both left the government last week, over what they said was Netanyahu's failure to form a strategy for the Gaza war.

SOUTH KOREAN ACTIVISTS SEND BACK BALLOONS TO NORTH KOREA:

South Korean activists sent balloons carrying K-pop and K-dramas on USB sticks to their northern neighbor on Thursday, days after North Korean balloons of trash and “filth” floated in the opposite direction.

The activist group Fighters for a Free North Korea (FFNK) released the giant balloons in the early hours of Thursday morning, with videos showing them floating away, some dragging giant posters visible from afar while others carried smaller plastic packages.

Inside the packages were 200,000 leaflets condemning North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, 5,000 USB sticks containing South Korean music videos and television shows, and 2,000 one dollar bills, according to FFNK.

Groups such as FFNK have been sending these kinds of balloons for years, carrying items prohibited in the isolated totalitarian dictatorship – including food, medicine, radios, propaganda leaflets and pieces of South Korean news.

In May, North Korea responded by sending its own giant balloons back south – containing trash, soil, pieces of paper and plastic, and what South Korean authorities described as “filth.”

Pyongyang claimed to have sent a total of 3,500 balloons carrying 15 tonnes of trash to its neighbor, according to state media KCNA, citing North Korea’s Vice Defense Minister Kim Kang Il.

Those balloons began landing in the South last week, temporarily disrupting flights and prompting authorities to warn residents to stay indoors. As of Monday, the South Korean military had found about 1,000 balloons.

South Korean activists say they will continue to send the balloons north – even though doing so was banned by the government years ago.

FFNK leader Park Sang-hak, a North Korean defector who fled to the South years ago, described the materials they sent as “letters of truth and freedom.”

As a young man in North Korea, these balloons had offered him a rare glimpse into the outside world, he said. He recalled being in a public square in 1992 when “I heard a huge balloon in the sky.”

“This round thing suddenly popped with a loud bang, then leaflets fell from the sky. I knew I wasn’t supposed to look at those things, so I put one in my pocket and went to the bathroom to check it out,” he said.

The leaflet he pocketed contained stories about North Korean defectors and their escapes, some of whom had crossed into China before heading toward South Korea.

Eight years later, Park fled the North – arriving in South Korea in 2000, and beginning his mission to send balloons across the border in 2006.

The leaflets he sends carry information about the Kim family, including the assassination of the leader’s half-brother Kim Jong Nam — as well as booklets about South Korea’s economic and political development, including photos of the main Seoul airport and the country’s fighter jets.

“South Korea is not an American colony or a wasteland of humanity like I learned in North Korea,” he told CNN on Wednesday. “We sent money, medicine, facts, truth, and love, but to send filth and trash in return? That’s an inhumane and barbaric act.”

Meanwhile, some South Korean residents living near the border are now on edge.

“I lived through the Korean War and other difficulties, and I was worried … What if we have another war?” said 84-year-old Song Kwang-ja, a resident of Yongin city, on Thursday.

“That reminded me of the old days. I still get goosebumps thinking and talking about it,” she said, adding that the balloons “felt like a childish prank.”

The incident has also worsened strained relations between the two countries. South Korea announced this week it would resume “all military activities” near the demarcation line – suspending a 2018 agreement signed by both nations at a brief time of relatively warm relations.

“Parliament of Uganda gets to unequivocally explain to the people of Uganda, all these various allegations of staff recruitments that are irregular, monies that are spent in manners that aren’t understandable. We are accountable to the people of Uganda, and no one should say, it isn’t the business of the public, this is their money, so how do you say, it isn’t their business? If we are to be a people centered Parliament, we must account.”
- Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi
