THE ANOINTING FOR MINISTRY

The anointing, the power of the Holy Spirit is given to people who are directly in ministry . We are all supposed to serve God . And God anoints us in so many ways.

But we are talking about those who are called to serve God in the five fold ministry ( Pastors , Teachers , Prophets , Apostles and Evangelists- Ephesians 4.11 ) and people who support these offices or the church as an organization ( administrators, media , ushers , cell groups workers , hospitality , worship team etc) ( 1 Cor 12.12-31)

God designed it that you should not do the work in your own power . You can try to do it without the Holy Spirit but you will be limited and it will be in a drag.

In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit would come upon people God had called for specific tasks . They were clearly told what they were to do for God’s Kingdom and God would put his power and Grace for them to fulfill the task .

Examples of people God called :

- Abraham to be a founding father of Israel , a father of nations and the one to appropriate land for God’s people
- Isaac, Jacob continued the mandate .
- Joseph’s role was to bring Israel to Egypt and save them.
- Moses to bring Israel out of Egypt and formalize the nation
- Deborah , Gideon , Samson and other judges were called and anointed to save Israel at specific times .
- Saul was called and anointed to be King
- David was called and anointed to be King over Israel . God called and anointed people to kingship.
- Jeremiah , Isaiah , Ezekiel, Daniel and others were called and anointed to be prophets.
- Esther was anointed to be a stateswoman and save the Jews at a strategic time.

There are so many others . We will look at what the Bible says about the anointing on some of the people God called in the Old Testament.

Abraham:

“Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.””
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬-‭3‬

Joseph :

“Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers they hated him even more. He said to them, “Hear this dream that I have dreamed: Behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and stood upright. And behold, your sheaves gathered around it and bowed down to my sheaf.” His brothers said to him, “Are you indeed to reign over us? Or are you indeed to rule over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words. Then he dreamed another dream and told it to his brothers and said, “Behold, I have dreamed another dream. Behold, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me.””

“Now his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to prosper (succeed) in his hand. [Gen 21:22; 26:27, 28; 41:38, 39]”

David:

“Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.”
‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭16‬:‭13‬ ‭

Gideon:

“But the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon, and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him. And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh, and they too were called out to follow him. And he sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, and they went up to meet them.”
‭‭Judges‬ ‭6‬:‭34‬-‭35‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Samson :

“And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon and struck down thirty men of the town and took their spoil and gave the garments to those who had told the riddle. In hot anger he went back to his father’s house.”
‭‭Judges‬ ‭14‬:‭19‬ ‭

Isaiah :

“In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.””
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭6‬:‭1‬-‭7‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Variations are used to mean the anointing :
- the Lord BLESSED
- The Lord WAS WITH HIM
- The SPIRIT OF THE LORD CAME UPON HIM
- The TOUCHED him
- The HAND OF GOD WAS on him

Some symbols of the Holy Spirit and His power are :

- oil
- Fire
- Water
- Wind
- Dove

The manifestation of Jesus in the flesh changed the game for mankind because now EVERYONE can be anointed in what they are doing for God . The Holy Spirit can empower anyone . Jesus himself demonstrated this .

Jesus was called the Messiah or in Greek , the Christ . Messiah in Hebrew or Christ in Greek means THE ANOINTED ONE. Christ is not His surname. It was a very prophetic title .

Jews believed that the Messiah would come to
Save them . He would be full of the Holy Spirit. Isaiah was shown this and prophesied like this:

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭61‬:‭1‬-‭2‬

Jesus said this scripture was fulfilled in him . ( Luke 4.21) .The Bible also says about Jesus :

“how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭10‬:‭38‬ ‭

Jesus promised the Holy Spirit for every believer. He said the purpose was to give us power to be witnesses and serve him . He said :

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.””
‭‭Acts‬ ‭1‬:‭8‬ ‭

That promise was fulfilled not long after that . The believers were filled with the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues and on them.

They became bold in ministry, full of fire at the place of prayer , signs and wonders following them, reaped thousands of souls , United as a community, generous towards God’s work, full of revelation and wisdom, ready to die for the cause of Christ. The Holy Spirit in the book of Acts and up to now is the main driver of ministry . He is the one who releases power and Grace for

The anointing changes you, empowers you , makes ministry easy , orders your destiny . Fights your enemies , opens doors , protects you. Makes you eloquent . Gives you supernatural results . Gives you supernatural ability in the way you do things . Connects you to the right people . Opens nations for you. Keeps you in check . Establishes and grows your ministry . Brings provision to your ministry . Produces deep impact .

An anointed ministry or minister is a sign and a wonder.

THE ANOINTING TO MAKE WEALTH

The world we live in is a fallen world. It is ruled by the devil and he has instituted financial systems that are ungodly and designed to harm you not bless you. There are people who make money outside God’s systems but they don’t have true joy and peace . And they are not building God’s Kingdom .

You, yourself are a fallen being. Not operating at optimum capacity unless you are born again. In fact God said because of your fallen nature , productivity will be hard for you.

“To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.””
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭3‬:‭17‬-‭19‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Jesus reversed this. So in Christ you prosper. In fact even before Christ died and rose again, any person with God’s power on them could prosper , no matter what the systems were.

The Bible says:

“The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭10‬:‭22‬ ‭

Let’s use Abraham’s family as an example .

God told Abraham that He ( God) would bless him. To bless is to “empower to prosper.” So when God says I am blessing you, it means He is empowering him to prosper. God said :

““I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.””
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭12‬:‭2‬-‭3‬ ‭NIV‬‬

The anointing was on Abraham to increase in wisdom, favor , productivity. There was a supernatural power on his work . Abraham increased spiritually , in family legacy but also wealth . The wealth did not just come, it came through his businesses and dealings.

- He was a rancher. He kept animals
- He dealt in silver , gold and precious jewels ( Genesis 13.2)
- He was rich in social capital . His network included kings. ( Genesis 13, Genesis 12)

Proof of his wealth was having a contingency of staff, including a private army of 318 people ( Genesis 14.14). Different people get rich in different ways. But for Abraham it was through the blessing of God on his ventures.

The Bible sums his life like this:

“Abraham was now very old, and the Lord had blessed him in every way.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭24‬:‭1‬ ‭

God spoke into his son Isaac’s life. Isaac was also blessed by God. The Lord released the anointing on him to produce wealth. The Lord said Isaac was blessed because his father obeyed him. The secret of the anointing for wealth from God is dedication and obedience .

The anointing works on something you are actually doing . Money does not just fall from heaven. Isaac diversified into growing crops. The year he sowed , he reaped a hundredfold in a famine ! It can only be God. It was a bad economy yet he prospered . The anointing does the impossible even in a bad economy . A bad economy or other issues should not be an excuse for you.

The Bible says he was also into wells and irrigation. That is probably how he was able to grow crops. Isaac was also so influential that he had a network that included movers and shakers including kings .

The Bible says:

“Now there was a famine in the land—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines in Gerar. The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live. Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you. For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham. I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because Abraham obeyed me and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees and my instructions.”

This verse shows how the anointing can increase you. God spoke to release the anointing. Then it says :

So Isaac stayed in Gerar. Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the Lord blessed him. The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy. He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him.

The economy Isaac lived in was affected by his wealth. He affected his community and region with his wealth . That is why God blesses you. To have an impact. The passage continues like this :

So all the wells that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up, filling them with earth. Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us; you have become too powerful for us.” So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar, where he settled. Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them. Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. But the herders of Gerar quarreled with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek, because they disputed with him. He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth, saying, “Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land.””
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭26‬:‭1‬-‭6‬, ‭12‬-‭20‬, ‭22‬ ‭

Maybe you are at zero and think these people had advantages. Let’s look at the generation of Jacob, Isaac’s son, Abraham’s grandson. For some reason Jacob came out of his father’s house with nothing . He had to start from zero. He was running away from his twin brother Esau. He left his father’s wealth behind. We know because he prayed this prayer :

“Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord will be my God and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.””
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭28‬:‭20‬-‭22‬ ‭NIV‬‬

God released his blessing on Jacob as well.

He went to get a job from Laban. He was working for someone while trying to build his own wealth . Jacob signed a contract with Laban, his father-in-law and boss , that was unusual. He was supposed to work 7 years to get Rachel as his wife. This was not a problem for Jacob because he loved the girl. But he did not read the fine print of the contract. They added the older sister Leah against his will, saying Rachel could not get married unless Leah was. They gave him an extra wife to work for for an extra seven years ! This must have derailed his financial plan instantly .

Jacob ended up having 13 children from four women. Because life is complicated. Financially his job was not going well. Laban changed his wages ten times. But even in all that the anointing was working . God was making a way for him to make money in hard circumstances. The Bible says :

“After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me on my way so I can go back to my own homeland. Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served you, and I will be on my way. You know how much work I’ve done for you.” But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by divination that the Lord has blessed me because of you.” He added, “Name your wages, and I will pay them.” Jacob said to him, “You know how I have worked for you and how your livestock has fared under my care. The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the Lord has blessed you wherever I have been. But now, when may I do something for my own household?” “What shall I give you?” he asked. “Don’t give me anything,” Jacob replied. “But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them: Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb and every spotted or speckled goat. They will be my wages. And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any lamb that is not dark-colored, will be considered stolen.” That same day he removed all the male goats that were streaked or spotted, and all the speckled or spotted female goats (all that had white on them) and all the dark-colored lambs, and he placed them in the care of his sons. Then he put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob continued to tend the rest of Laban’s flocks. In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭30‬:‭25‬-‭33‬, ‭35‬-‭36‬, ‭43‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Jacob explained his situation like this :

“He said to them, “I see that your father’s attitude toward me is not what it was before, but the God of my father has been with me. You know that I’ve worked for your father with all my strength, yet your father has cheated me by changing my wages ten times. However, God has not allowed him to harm me. If he said, ‘The speckled ones will be your wages,’ then all the flocks gave birth to speckled young; and if he said, ‘The streaked ones will be your wages,’ then all the flocks bore streaked young. So God has taken away your father’s livestock and has given them to me. “In breeding season I once had a dream in which I looked up and saw that the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled or spotted. The angel of God said to me in the dream, ‘Jacob.’ I answered, ‘Here I am.’ And he said, ‘Look up and see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled or spotted, for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you. I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and where you made a vow to me. Now leave this land at once and go back to your native land.’ ””
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭31‬:‭5‬-‭13‬ ‭

God helped Jacob against the odds. It doesn’t matter what is against you, the oil on your life will make a way. Jacob got wealthy despite the challenges.

Joseph, his son also had to beat difficult odds . We can imagine that Jacob provided for his children. He was training them in his ranching business. Then the devil entered his household to incite his boys to sell their brother into slavery.

Joseph who was being trained in the family business was now in a dark place. For him he was even a slave . He was not working for pay. Yet the Bible says the anointing was upon him and set him apart. The anointing can ear mark you to be distinct even in a ditch. The Bible says :

“Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there. The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭39‬:‭1‬-‭6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Joseph ended up in jail. The Bible says the anointing was working there as well.
The Bible says :

“Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭39‬:‭20‬-‭23‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Joseph ended up prime minister in Egypt. He was not in business. He was the kind of person wired to have a job. But he was anointed in his job. Grabbing the highest job in the land . The Bible says :

““It is just as I said to Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do. Seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the land of Egypt, but seven years of famine will follow them. Then all the abundance in Egypt will be forgotten, and the famine will ravage the land. The abundance in the land will not be remembered, because the famine that follows it will be so severe. The reason the dream was given to Pharaoh in two forms is that the matter has been firmly decided by God, and God will do it soon. “And now let Pharaoh look for a discerning and wise man and put him in charge of the land of Egypt. Let Pharaoh appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance. They should collect all the food of these good years that are coming and store up the grain under the authority of Pharaoh, to be kept in the cities for food. This food should be held in reserve for the country, to be used during the seven years of famine that will come upon Egypt, so that the country may not be ruined by the famine.” So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?” Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you.””
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭41‬:‭28‬-‭36‬, ‭38‬-‭40‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams and gave an administrative solution and even recommended himself for the job. He entered into a realm of wealth and influence unlike anything he had ever dreamed.

The hand of God on your life will set you apart. Learning from these four men, there are things that must happen:

- The anointing works in a business or job
- God gives ideas & instructions, follow them. Pray to get them.
- God expects you to be OBEDIENT to his word and his directions . He expects you to be dedicated to Him.
- God can take you from zero
- Hard work is essential
- Vision is necessary
- It takes a process
- It takes faith
- Be consistent , God will slowly take you to heights you can’t imagine
- It is all for his glory and for the Kingdom and to bless others. All these people were building God’s Kingdom.

Remember this :

“But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.”
‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭8‬:‭18‬ ‭NIV‬‬

THE ANOINTING GIVES YOU SUPERNATURAL SKILL

God’s power in your life gives you supernatural skill. If you have decided on a path or are following your calling, and are submitted to God, He will give you uncommon skill and wisdom.

There may be a thousand people doing what you do . Medicine, fashion , catering , IT , content creation , art, sports, financial management , administration , preaching , care giving , teaching , business or whatever it is. You will stand out because the anointing gives you unusual ability and skill. As long as you are submitted to God. As you pray, pray for skill.

People think the Holy Spirit has nothing to do with practical work. That we leave Him at church on Sunday. But His Job is actually in your daily life after Sunday . In things like your job. You are representing the Kingdom in your job , calling or business . It is your sphere of dominion. You have to shine. You win, God wins. So you can tap in to the anointing for skill and excellence .

God is able to give supetnatural skill. The Lord wanted the Israelites to build the Tabernacle in the wilderness. A tent of worship. He wanted it beautifully made because our God has class and likes beautiful things . There were two men to lead the project of creation and interior decoration. They were natural artisans but the Bible says they were also supernaturally anointed for the task. The Bible says :

“Now the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have called by name Bezalel, son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. I have filled him with the Spirit of God in wisdom and skill, in understanding and intelligence, in knowledge, and in all kinds of craftsmanship, to make artistic designs for work in gold, in silver, and in bronze, and in the cutting of stones for settings, and in the carving of wood, to work in all kinds of craftsmanship. And behold, I Myself have appointed with him Oholiab, son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; to all who are wise-hearted I have given the skill and ability to make everything that I have commanded you: the Tent of Meeting, the ark of the Testimony, the mercy seat that is upon it, all the furnishings of the tent— the table [for the bread] and its utensils, the pure gold lampstand with all its utensils, the [golden] altar of incense, the [bronze] altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, the basin and its base— the finely worked garments, the holy garments for Aaron the [high] priest and the garments for his sons to minister as priests, and the anointing oil and the sweet and fragrant incense for the Holy Place. They are to make them according to all that I have commanded you.””
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭31‬:‭1‬-‭11‬ ‭AMP‬‬

So they did the following on the project :
Interior design according to God’s specifications
Processing of gold and other items
Creation of utensils
Creation of cloth & artifacts
Perfumeries for the anointing oil
Fashion design

And other things .

When I first read all these things a long time ago , I realized that God is very familiar with every profession given to man. The Holy Spirit can therefore help you . He knows computers more than you. He knows fashion more than you. He knows how to create perfumes more than you. He knows farming more than you. He knows how to cook more than you. He knows sportsmanship more than you. He knows how to write and author more than you ( he has had an international bestseller for thousands of years called The Bible ) , he knows marketing more than you. He knows preaching more than you. He knows videography more than you. He knows internet based anything more than you. He understands algorithms & coding more than you . He knows finance more than you. He know how to do nails and hair more than you. He knows how to teach more than you. He knows how to create anything or do anything .

Ask Him to anoint you with knowledge and skill.

I like the testimony of George Washington Carver (1860-1943). An American inventor who was a scientist but deeply rooted in his Christian faith. He always prayed about his work and started the day in deep prayer.

He received divine insights to create so many things. The Lord led him discover over 300 uses for peanuts (groundnuts) in a lab. He says the Holy Spirit would literally take over and show him. Leading him in various experiments.

I also heard the testimony of Strive Masiyiwa of Zimbabwe . Billionaire tech giant and philanthropist. He talks about how the Holy Spirit led him in negotiations in bidding wars with international companies to buy telecommunications companies or get licenses in countries .

There are many more like these. The common factor is they are first dedicated to God with all their hearts. Then they commit their work and skill to the Holy Spirit to lead them and direct them.

Warning : God is not substandard. He will require you to work with diligence, integrity and excellence if you want to tap into His anointing.

The Lord can give you supernatural wisdom and skill whatever you do. Ask for supernatural skill.
