Uganda to Provide Free Power Connections to Over 900,000 Households

On Friday, under the Electricity Access Scale-up Project, Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) and the Ministry of Energy signed two major agreements: Results-Based Financing (RBF) and Materials Provision.

💡 Under the RBF agreement, UEDCL will initially fund 508,035 new connections, with the ministry reimbursing the company after independent verification of each connection.

The Materials Provision Agreement covers 388,400 new connections, with the ministry supplying materials such as poles, conductors, and meters.

👉 Both agreements support Uganda’s Energy Policy and Transition Plan, which aims to raise electricity access from 60% to 100%.

The project aims to unlock 500MW of energy demand by targeting:

🟠schools,
🟠health centers,
🟠industrial parks,

Uganda to Introduce Six-Month HIV Prevention Injection Following Groundbreaking Research.

The Uganda Aids Commission announced that Lenacapavir, a long-acting HIV prevention drug, provides 100% protection for HIV-negative individuals as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) following successful global clinical trials.

The US FDA has approved the production and use of Lenacapavir, and Uganda plans to incorporate it into its national HIV prevention strategy.

The rollout of Lenacapavir in Uganda will be phased, ensuring safety and compliance, with the Ministry of Health coordinating the process.

Steps include evaluating and licensing the drug, updating HIV prevention guidelines, training healthcare workers, and revising data collection tools.

Until Lenacapavir is integrated, Uganda will continue offering existing PrEP options, including oral PrEP and efforts to make Cabotegravir more accessible.

The Uganda Aids Commission reaffirmed its commitment to ending the HIV/Aids epidemic by 2030 with effective and innovative solutions.

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni to Run for Reelection Early Next Year: Ruling Party

"The president [...] will pick up expression-of-interest forms for two positions, one for chairperson of the party and the other to contest if he is given the chance for presidential flag bearer," said Tanga Odoi, chairperson of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party's electoral body.

Uganda’s general election, which includes parliamentary votes, will take place in January.

NRM and other parties are currently vetting candidates for the election. Museveni’s expected main challenger is pop star-turned-politician Bobi Wine, who finished second in 2021 and has confirmed his intention to run again in 2026.

Yoweri Museveni has been the president of Uganda since the 1986.

Uganda ban exportation of raw minerals

Uganda has reinforced a nationwide ban on exporting unprocessed raw materials to promote domestic industrialization and enhance export value.

President Yoweri Museveni declared that exporting raw materials would not be tolerated, emphasizing the need to strengthen local manufacturing and reduce economic dependency on raw exports.

The ban affects key sectors: agriculture (bananas, beans, maize, rice, cassava, tea, coffee, fruits, vegetables, dairy, fish), forestry (raw timber), and mining (unprocessed minerals like iron ore and gold).

The government supports the transition with tax exemptions on imported inputs not available domestically and tax reductions on intermediate goods for local manufacturing.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development will withhold export permits for unprocessed minerals, granting them only to companies that engage in value addition.

Officials argue the policy will create jobs, boost industrial output, and enhance Uganda's competitiveness in Africa's manufacturing economy, though businesses reliant on raw exports must adjust operations.

The decision aligns with Pan-African efforts to retain more wealth from natural resources and reduce foreign exploitation of the continent's raw assets.

Should Dr. Kimera be held accountable for hus tweets?

Dr. Solomon Kimera faced backlash for a tweet alleged mocking women who delay childbirth, suggesting fibroids as a consequence, prompting calls for accountability from women's rights advocates.

Critics argue that Dr. Kimera's tweet was unprofessional and reinforced outdated gender roles, emphasizing that professionals should educate rather than ridicule.

Defenders claim Dr. Kimera was stating a biological fact humorously and warn against censoring professionals for social commentary, as long as no direct harm is done.

The debate highlights the tension between medical ethics and free speech, emphasizing the need for responsible sharing of facts while respecting personal choices.
