KCCA Convenes Special Council Meeting over Nakivubo Channel Dispute.

📌Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) will hold a special council meeting to address the growing controversy over businessman Hamis Kiggundu's redevelopment of the Nakivubo Drainage Channel.

📌According to a notice dated August 25, 2025, by Council Speaker Maala Zahrah Luyirika, the meeting will include a speaker's address and a discussion on the Nakivubo Channel disputes before adjournment.

📌This session follows President Yoweri Museveni's approval of Kiggundu’s plan to clean, cover, and redevelop the channel, allowing him to build properties above it to recoup expenses.

📌While the President praised the proposal as innovative, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has condemned it as illegal and fraudulent, asserting that Kiggundu lacks the necessary approvals from both KCCA and the National Environment Management Authority.

Uganda, Japan Launch Third Phase of Connect Program to Boost ICT Startups.

📌JICA, in collaboration with Uganda's Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, has launched the third phase of the Uganda-Japan Connect program to help Ugandan digital startups scale up and compete globally in the tech ecosystem. At the launch in Nakawa, Shirley Nakyejwe, a senior ICT officer, emphasized the program's importance to Ugandan innovators.

EU aids Spain with Wildfires amid rising Death toll.

📌Following Spain's activation of an EU disaster assistance mechanism, the European Union is sending two water bomber aircraft to help combat the country's wildfires. The assistance comes as a third person has died from injuries sustained fighting the blazes.

📌With Spain's weather agency, Aemet, forecasting a heatwave to continue until next Monday and temperatures expected to exceed 44 °C in some areas, concerns are rising that the wildfires will spread.

Uganda's Coffee Avoids EU Sanctions.

📌The Ugandan government has reassured coffee industry stakeholders that the European Union Deforestation Regulations (EUDR), effective December 30, will not negatively impact the country's coffee sector.

📌The EUDR aims to protect the environment and reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by requiring agricultural exports to the EU to be free from deforestation.

📌While the regulations cover commodities such as cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soy, and wood, Uganda is primarily concerned about coffee, as the EU accounts for 65% of its coffee exports.

📌According to Assistant Commissioner for Coffee Production, Keimusya Rauben, Uganda is already a leader in Africa in complying with the EU regulations, so Ugandans should not be overly concerned.

The Uganda Government is to commission the Kampala Traffic Control Centre.

📌Uganda is commissioning a modern Traffic Control Centre at KCCA headquarters to improve traffic management and road safety in Kampala.

📌Developed with support from JICA, the facility will monitor traffic conditions in real time, coordinate emergency responses, and strengthen enforcement.

📌The Ministry of Works and Transport, after a JICA-sponsored stakeholder visit, stated that consultations will ensure effective and publicly acceptable traffic enforcement. Uganda's police report indicates a 6.4% increase in road crashes, from 23,608 in 2023 to 25,107 in 2024.

Entebbe Airport Security Intercepts Ugandan Mercenaries Bound for the
Russia-Ukraine War.

📌Joint security forces at Entebbe International Airport intercepted nine Ugandan men bound for Moscow, Russia, allegedly to work as security guards. Security sources revealed the group is part of a larger operation involving over 100 Ugandans covertly recruited to leave the country in phases.

📌A recruitment company named MAGNIT is suspected of exploiting labor and engaging in human trafficking, violating local and international regulations. Authorities, including the Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Development, were unaware of the recruitment, raising suspicions about its legality.

Uganda, Tanzania Select Gas Pipeline Consultant.

📌Uganda and Tanzania have chosen a consultant to conduct a feasibility study for a gas pipeline connecting the two countries. This selection follows Uganda's bid invitation issued over a year ago.

📌The Solicitor General is currently reviewing the contract award application for Uganda's chosen consultant and is expected to approve it soon, allowing work to begin this quarter.

📌The gas pipeline will be part of a larger oil and gas infrastructure initiative between Uganda and Tanzania, which already includes the construction of a 1,443km crude oil pipeline.

📌While earlier talks of Tanzania investing in Uganda's oil refinery have subsided, they haven't been completely abandoned.

Over 10 Arrested in Kagadi for Using Fake Papers in UPDF Recruitment.

📌Thirteen people (11 men and two women) were arrested in Kagadi District for presenting forged academic documents during the UPDF recruitment exercise.

📌A detailed verification of credentials at the recruitment center revealed counterfeit Primary Leaving Examination slips, forged Uganda Certificate of Education certificates, falsified testimonials claiming Senior Four completion in 2024, and fake identification cards.

📌Kagadi Resident District Commissioner Nanshemeza Caroline condemned the act, calling it senseless given Uganda's free primary and secondary education. The suspects are in police custody awaiting further investigation.
