YOUTH IN WESTERN UGANDA TRAINED IN FINANCIAL LITERACY AND AGRI-BUSINESS
By Reagan Musinguzi
Youth in the western region of Uganda have continued to benefit from ongoing financial literacy and agribusiness training sessions aimed at improving household income and livelihoods.
The initiative is sponsored by the Government of South Korea through its Ministry of Interior and Safety, in partnership with the Uganda Federation of MG Community Credit Cooperatives (UFCC) and the Korean Federation of Community Credit Cooperatives (KFCC).
The latest training, held at Isunga Central in Kasenda Sub-county, Kabarole District, attracted 54 participants, including both members and potential members of the Saemaul Geumgo (MG) Cooperative. The training sought to support MGs in mobilizing more members, savings, and share-capital contributions in order to build adequate and low-cost loanable funds. It also aimed at educating new members about the core Saemaul Geumgo principles and reawakening dormant members to reactivate their savings and loan accounts.
In addition to financial literacy, participants were encouraged to take agriculture as a business rather than mere subsistence farming, emphasizing the potential of agribusiness to improve their incomes and livelihoods.
Speaking during the session, Mr. Sekadde Frank urged the youth to focus on five basic family needs — food, education, shelter, personal development, and good health. He underscored the importance of cultivating a saving culture and having a clear vision for the future.
“A vision drives you to dream big and plan big. When you save and plan wisely, development becomes achievable,” Mr. Sekadde noted.
He further encouraged the youth to form groups and work collectively, emphasizing that unity and teamwork are key drivers of community development.
The ongoing program continues to inspire young people across western Uganda to embrace commercial agriculture while reserving part of their produce for home consumption. Through these initiatives, the Government of South Korea, KFCC, and UFCC aim to build financially stable and self-reliant communities in the region.
