YOUTH IN WESTERN UGANDA TRAINED IN FINANCIAL LITERACY AND AGRI-BUSINESS

By Reagan Musinguzi

Youth in the western region of Uganda have continued to benefit from ongoing financial literacy and agribusiness training sessions aimed at improving household income and livelihoods.

The initiative is sponsored by the Government of South Korea through its Ministry of Interior and Safety, in partnership with the Uganda Federation of MG Community Credit Cooperatives (UFCC) and the Korean Federation of Community Credit Cooperatives (KFCC).

The latest training, held at Isunga Central in Kasenda Sub-county, Kabarole District, attracted 54 participants, including both members and potential members of the Saemaul Geumgo (MG) Cooperative. The training sought to support MGs in mobilizing more members, savings, and share-capital contributions in order to build adequate and low-cost loanable funds. It also aimed at educating new members about the core Saemaul Geumgo principles and reawakening dormant members to reactivate their savings and loan accounts.

In addition to financial literacy, participants were encouraged to take agriculture as a business rather than mere subsistence farming, emphasizing the potential of agribusiness to improve their incomes and livelihoods.

Speaking during the session, Mr. Sekadde Frank urged the youth to focus on five basic family needs — food, education, shelter, personal development, and good health. He underscored the importance of cultivating a saving culture and having a clear vision for the future.

“A vision drives you to dream big and plan big. When you save and plan wisely, development becomes achievable,” Mr. Sekadde noted.

He further encouraged the youth to form groups and work collectively, emphasizing that unity and teamwork are key drivers of community development.

The ongoing program continues to inspire young people across western Uganda to embrace commercial agriculture while reserving part of their produce for home consumption. Through these initiatives, the Government of South Korea, KFCC, and UFCC aim to build financially stable and self-reliant communities in the region.

TOMPA Moves to Lift Media Ban on Hon. Alex Ruhunda After Apology

The Tooro Media Practitioners Association (TOMPA) is set to lift a ban it had earlier imposed on Hon. Alex Ruhunda, following a reconciliation meeting held on Saturday, August 16, 2025.

The ban, which was enforced on September 27, 2024, came after the legislator made what TOMPA described as “derogatory, reckless and ambiguous remarks” aimed at discrediting and demeaning members of the fourth estate.

Saturday’s harmonization meeting, held between the TOMPA executive and Hon. Ruhunda, was spearheaded by his campaign manager, Mr. Tony Othieno, as part of efforts to rebuild trust and improve relations with the media.

In his address during the meeting, Hon. Ruhunda extended an apology to the media fraternity for his past statements and pledged to promote positive engagement going forward.

According to TOMPA Vice President, Mr. Nyanzi John Akiiki, the association has welcomed the legislator’s remorsefulness and commitment to change. “Hon. Alex will be invited to one of our upcoming meetings to address the entire membership. Following his apology and promise to foster better relations with the media, we ask members of TOMPA to lift the ban,” he said in a statement.

The move marks a new chapter in relations between the media practitioners and the legislator, signaling a step toward stronger collaboration between leaders and the press in Tooro.

The Toro Women in Media Association has launched a skilling and recycling initiative aimed at economically empowering female journalists while promoting environmental sustainability. The project was unveiled on a Saturday afternoon at Ak Garden in Fort Portal City, where the association members gathered to kick-start the initiative. The goal of the project is to create sustainable income streams for female journalists while encouraging the responsible disposal and reuse of waste materials.

Dorren Nasiima, the leader of the Toro Women in Media Association, emphasized that economic empowerment for female journalists is crucial for building stronger families and creating a self-reliant media community. She expressed her belief that the initiative would provide both income-generating opportunities and promote environmental conservation.

The project involves 20 dedicated members of the association who have ventured into various creative fields, including soap making, bakery production, tailoring, multimedia crafts, and designing artistic products from recycled materials. These activities aim to reduce waste while creating income for the participants.
