L.C V Chairperson Kabarole district Hon. Ruben Kimome Araali has urged communities living around protected areas to safeguard natural resources, warning that conservation is the key to securing livelihoods for future generations.
Kimome made the call today in Kamabale Parish, Karangura Sub-county, while presiding over the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the local community.
Speaking directly to residents gathered for the event, the District Chairperson commended UWA for opening doors to cooperation with neighbors of the national park. Under the new agreement, locals will be allowed to access selected resources from the park on designated days — including firewood, medicinal herbs, and building materials.
He emphasized that sustainable management of natural resources is essential not only for conservation, but also for protecting livelihoods and supporting long-term development in Kabarole District.
The signing marks a shift toward closer collaboration between UWA and communities bordering protected areas, with local leaders hoping it will reduce human-wildlife conflict while promoting responsible use of park resources.
