Gulu University Students Face Accommodation Crisis as Demand Outstrips Supply
Newly Admitted and Continuing Students Struggle to Secure Hostel Rooms Amidst Insufficient FacilitiesGULU, UGANDA - The start of the new academic year 2024/2025 at Gulu University has been marred by a severe shortage of accommodation rooms, leaving hundreds of students without a place to call home. Both newly admitted and continuing students are facing difficulties in securing hostel rooms, sparking concerns about their welfare and academic performance.
According to sources, the university's hostel facilities can only accommodate approximately 80% of the student population, resulting in a significant deficit. This has led to a stressful and uncertain situation for students, who are struggling to find affordable and convenient housing solutions. "We were promised that we would get hostel rooms, but now we're being told that there aren't enough spaces available," said Akello Esther, a newly admitted student. "It's frustrating and disappointing, especially after we've worked so hard to get here." Students are calling for urgent action to address the crisis. Students also remained sceptical, citing concerns about affordability and accessibility due to increment on hostel fee. As the situation continues to unfold, students are advised to seek assistance from the university's accommodation office and student union (Welfare Minister). The accommodation crisis at Gulu University highlights the need for urgent investment in student infrastructure to ensure a conducive learning environment.
