Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa, the world's largest tropical lake, and the second-largest freshwater lake in the world.
The lake covers an area of 26,828 square miles (69,484 square km). It is located in Tanzania 🇹🇿, Uganda 🇺🇬, and Kenya 🇰🇪.
Tanzania holds 49% of the lake, Uganda holds 45%, and Kenya holds 6%.
Lake Victoria is not just a body of water surrounded by land; it is a tourist attraction, a source of food, water, and income for Tanzanians, Ugandans, and Kenyans.
Lake Victoria original names are:
● Ugandan ancestors called it Nalubaale.
● Tanzanian ancestors called it Kerewe.
● Kenyan ancestors called it Nam Lolwe.
It's in 1858 that British explorer John Hanning Speke visited the lake accompanied by locals, and he renamed the lake "Lake Victoria" in honor of Queen Victoria, who was the reigning British monarch at that time.
