In the remote Rukungiri district, pregnant mothers used to find it hard to reach the hospital in case of an emergency. This would lead to the loss of unborn babies, mothers, or both.
Every day in Uganda, about 16 women die due to maternal mortality while 94 babies are stillborns.
A waiting home was established a couple of years ago. Expecting mothers can stay there for as long as they wish, to enable close supervision. This also helps to avoid late admission and targets mothers who have a history with complicated childbirths. Instead of coming in as emergencies, or in a worst-case scenario, dying on the way, the expectant mothers have their lives less in danger.
The 24-bed capacity facility has helped to reduce prenatal and neonatal deaths by 11%

There are only 12 secondary schools to serve 326 rural administrative units(villages), in Jinja district, Eastern Uganda. Quick math; thatโs one secondary school to serve approximately 27 villages. It is challenging for school-going children especially girls to make it to school on time. Also, the temptation to quit school is more apparent, because of such impediments.
It is upon this background that a non-profit, The First African Bicycle Organization(FABIO) is helping school-going children, especially girls acquire bicycles, to address this education access challenge.
