The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has publicly addressed the recent allegations of staff misconduct in sharing personal data, as highlighted by a viral BBC Africa investigation.

In a statement, NIRA confirmed that an investigation has been initiated in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs Office and the Uganda Police Force.

This follows claims that individuals linked to a brutal s*x trafficking ring had illicit access to NIRA’s database, allegedly to process travel documents for their victims.

The BBC documentary exposed a dark s*x trafficking network operating in the luxurious neighbourhoods of Dubai.

The report identified Charles Mwesigwa, a former London bus driver, as the alleged ringleader.

Mwesigwa brazenly confessed to the undercover reporter that he supplies women for s*x parties, with prices starting at $1,000.

The investigation also brought to light the horrific and degrading acts to which the women were subjected.

The report linked Mwesigwa to the deaths of two Ugandan women, Monic Karungi and Kayla Murungi, who died in controversial circumstances after falling from high-rise apartments, with their deaths ruled as suicides.

Uganda Musicians Association (UMA) President Cindy Sanyu has announced her intention to formally complain to President Yoweri Museveni about the government’s tendency to stifle the careers of musicians who also diverge into opposition politics.

The songstress says she will raise this matter with the president in their upcoming meeting with members of her association.

“Soon we shall have a meeting as leaders of the Uganda Musicians Association with President Yoweri Museveni, and this is something I will talk about,” she said.

“I will ask him if there is a possibility of differentiating between the mucic and political careers of a person.”

Cindy was disappointed that her friend and fellow artist could not join her on stage at the concert.

“I absolutely miss him, especially given that we have a song together,” she said.

“At my concert, it would have been heavenly to have him show up on stage just as Bobi Wine, not as Kyagulanyi, the political leader.”

The National Unity Platform (NUP) is facing a crisis over its presidential bid, after learning Friday that its candidate Bobi Wine could be disqualified.

Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, told reporters on Friday afternoon that the party’s candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, is at risk of being eliminated from the race for failure to meet requirements.

According to Rubongoya, the Electoral Commission (EC) has informed the party that it has failed to submit the required number of signatures to support its presidential nomination.

The claim, made just days before the nomination deadline, has sent the party into panic mode

Rubongoya stated that after weeks of seeking an update from the EC on their submitted signatures, they were finally informed on Friday that the party’s tally was insufficient.

“We have been pushing the commission every day to give us an update on the signatures we submitted so that we can pay nomination fees”

“Today, they told us that NUP did not submit enough signatures, and that only President Museveni and a few others have submitted the required signatures.”

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) ambassador to Uganda has dismissed claims that his country has blocked visa access for Ugandans.

Speaking to New Vision by phone on September 18, 2025, Abdalle Hassan AlShamsi, the UAE envoy and head of mission in Kampala, said there has been no official communication about a visa ban.

“What is circulating is false,” AlShamsi stated.

His remarks followed reports alleging that the UAE, a top destination for Ugandans seeking jobs, would stop issuing visas to Ugandans from January 2026.

Over 100,000 Ugandans legally work in the UAE, mainly in low-skill jobs.

The UAE, made up of seven emirates including Abu Dhabi and Dubai, has previously restricted visas for Ugandans.

In 2022, it halted the issuing of 30-day visit visas for Ugandans and citizens from 20 other nations.

Uganda’s Foreign Affairs permanent secretary, Vincent Bagiire, also told New Vision that no official notice had been sent to Kampala about any visa freeze.

He explained that the UAE only restricts applicants who fail to meet visa rules.

The denial comes amid online claims that visas had been suspended for citizens from several countries, including Uganda, Libya, Yemen, Lebanon, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Sudan and Somalia.

The issue has gained attention following a recent BBC investigation into Charles Mwesigwa, a Ugandan accused of running a s*x ring in Dubai involving Ugandan women.
