UPDATE:
Kenya High Court has declined to stop the burial of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, clearing the way for funeral arrangements to proceed as planned.

This follows a petition filed by Michael Onyango Otieno, who identified himself in court documents as a senior member of the Luo community. Onyango had moved to court under a certificate of urgency, challenging the 72-hour timeline set for Odinga’s burial.

KENYA | RAILA ODINGA
Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has died at the age of 80.

Odinga died on Wednesday, while receiving Medical Treatment at a Hospital in India.

In recent weeks, there has been speculation about his health, although family members and political allies had dismissed reports suggesting he was critically ill.

A political mobiliser and towering figure in Kenyan politics, Odinga served as Kenyan Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013 and also ran unsuccessfully for the presidency five times.

He will be remembered for his contribution towards multiparty democracy in 1991 and a new constitution in 2010.

Burkina Faso’s Military Government has arrested eight people working for a humanitarian organisation, accusing them of “spying and treason”

Burkina Faso’s Security Minister Mahamadou Sana said the eight people arrested work for the International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO), a Netherlands-based group specialising in humanitarian safety.

Those detained included a French man, a French-Senegalese woman, a Czech man, a Malian and four Burkinabe nationals, Sana said, alleging the staff members had continued working for the organisation after it was banned for three months, for allegedly “collecting sensitive data without authorisation”.

08/10/2025

President Yoweri Museveni has approved the creation of a new district, Aber, to be carved out of Oyam District in Northern Uganda.

While campaigning in Oyam, he acknowledged residents’ requests for better service delivery, saying, “On the issue of Aber, we have got plans to deal with that issue but also deal with the roads… If we don’t have enough, we start with roads.”

In an unusual move, Museveni asked the crowd to vote on whether to prioritize the Bobi–Loro road or the new district. The people chose Aber District. “I will surrender for the district, but I won’t stop the road,” he added.

Local leaders welcomed the news, noting Oyam’s large size and over 1,000 villages. Bosco Onyike Ogwal, NRM chairperson for Oyam, said, “Oyam is a unique district. It’s the largest in northern Uganda and second only to Wakiso nationally… We need Aber district carved out.”
