By 2030, an estimated 3 billion people will be living without adequate shelter. In order to meet this growing demand, there must be 50 homes built per minute before 2030.

Here is Smart Havens Africa that was launched back in 2018 with a mission to enable women to own climate-smart homes through a novel financing plan. Interestingly, these houses are built by women using low-cost technology.

Anne's goal through her business is to enable 1 million women-headed families to become proud owners of climate-smart homes by 2030.

Smart Havens Africa also offers a Traineeship Program to graduates and others who wish
gain hands-on experience in the housing sector.

Question: Is this affordable and achievable?

To boost access to finance for women-led SMEs in Côte d’Ivoire, IFC - International Finance Corporation and the Africa Local Currency Bond Fund last week announced an anchor investment in a gender bond from Ecobank Côte d’Ivoire, the first gender bond to be issued in the West Africa Economic and Monetary Union.

Proceeds from the bond will help Ecobank, Côte d’Ivoire provide almost 1,200 loans to women-owned small and medium-sized enterprises in Côte d’Ivoire, supporting growth and job creation and helping to address the large credit gap women-owned businesses face in the country.

In a largely male-dominated field in many African countries. Women beekeepers often struggle to gain acceptance by their industry peers, which can limit their networks, confidence and opportunities.

Margaret Mwuara is on a mission to change the narrative. Her company, Samaru Business Ventures, produces high-quality honey and wax products while providing women with the training they need to succeed as beekeepers.

Margaret Mwuara:
"Our honey business started when our children became sick from consuming honey from other sources – even ending up in hospital." We decided to produce our own honey using five hives, initially for personal use.

Soon, we realized there was a business opportunity. We saw a gap in the market for honey and beekeeping in Kenya and decided to fill it by producing pure honey and other bee products from our beehives. We used modern beekeeping techniques that made the process more efficient and contributed to the business’ success. Little by little, Samaru Business Ventures started growing.

From humanitarian relief to economic development assistance, billions of dollars have flowed into the continent with the aim of alleviating poverty and fostering growth. Yet, despite these efforts, many Africa nations still grapple with under development, high debt levels, and economic dependency.

Over the past years, Africa has received more than $1.2 trillion in aid from international donors, including the World Bank, IFC - International Finance Corporation and bilateral partners like the United States of America and the European Commission. However, the results have been mixed with some scholars arguing that aid has entrenched a cycle of dependency rather than fostering sustainable growth.

Is it time for Africa to rethink self-sufficiency?

MTN Ghana reaffirms its commitment to women’s empowerment by sponsoring the National Women’s Summit 2025. The event was held last week on Friday, at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).

While speaking at the event, the Chief Enterprise Business Officer at Ghana, Angela Mensah-Poku, highlighted the company’s dedication to supporting women entrepreneurs, particularly those in the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector.

She further noted that many women-led SMEs struggle to secure funding due to the informal nature of their businesses and lack of required financial documentation.

To tackle this, she stated that MTN Ghana is working closely with banks, SME Ghana, and Nova to provide training in areas such as bookkeeping, marketing, and tax compliance.

As today marks International Women’s Day, it is important to highlight areas where women have endured and areas where they have thrived.

According to the Global Gender Gap Report from the World Economic Forum, Sub-Saharan Africa has advanced by an overall +5.6 percentage points since 2006 when it comes to closing the gender gap.

With that said, here are the African countries with the highest index for women’s economic participation and opportunity with Liberia leading as per the Global Gender Gap Report.
