JUST IN: Government Seeks Return of Ugandan Woman Facing Murder Charges in Syria

The Government of Uganda has begun diplomatic talks to secure the release and possible return of a Ugandan woman, Vicky Ajok, who is facing murder charges in Syria, officials have confirmed.

Ajok is accused of killing renowned 87-year-old Syrian actress Huda Shaarawi at her home in Damascus, a case that could carry the death penalty if she is convicted under Syrian law.

Hon. Esther Davinia Anyakun, the Minister of State for Gender, Labour and Social Development, says government teams are working with Uganda’s Embassy in Cairo and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to locate Ajok and open communication with Syrian authorities.

“We want to see how that girl can be rescued,” the minister told reporters, noting that Uganda has no embassy in Syria and efforts are being coordinated through Cairo.

Minister Anyakun also warned Ugandans about the risks of travelling to war-torn countries, adding that many who go to zones like Syria make the journey under unsafe conditions.

The government says it will continue engaging diplomatically to protect Ugandans abroad and address rising cases of unsafe labour migration.

UCC Bans Split-Screen Ads During News

The Uganda Communications Commission has ordered all TV stations, including NBS TV, NTV, and Bukedde TV, to stop running split-screen ads during news and current affairs shows.

Split-screen ads show commercials alongside the main programme, but UCC says this confuses viewers, distracts from news, and undermines editorial integrity.

The regulator warned that stations continuing the practice risk sanctions and urged broadcasters to stick to traditional commercial breaks. The move is seen as a step to protect journalism and public trust.

BREAKING: The Executive Director of the Centre for Citizens’ Governance (CCG), Dr. Sarah Bireete, has been released on bail after nearly a month in detention. Court set Shs 1 million cash bail and Shs 10 million non-cash sureties, ordered her to surrender her passport, and restricted her travel without court permission.

Dr. Bireete was arrested in December and charged with unlawfully obtaining and disclosing voters’ data belonging to the Electoral Commission, under Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy laws. She has denied the charges.

Her detention sparked concern among civil society groups and regional organisations, who questioned the timing of the arrest during the election period and raised issues about civic space and the rule of law. Authorities, however, maintain the case is about enforcing data protection laws.
