In a stunning legal development, dfcu Bank has emerged victorious in a key procedural ruling against Crane Bank Limited (CBL) at the English High Court. This latest decision dismisses a critical attempt by CBL’s legal team to exclude key forensic audit reports from the ongoing legal proceedings, and it could have far-reaching consequences for the case and the broader Ugandan financial landscape.

The case revolves around the controversial 2017 acquisition of Crane Bank by dfcu, a transaction that has been dogged by allegations of mismanagement and fraudulent activity. The latest court ruling, which has sent shockwaves through both legal and financial circles, will now allow crucial findings from a forensic audit by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to be presented as evidence in court.

Uganda has recorded a staggering USD 1.91 billion in gold export earnings in the first five months of 2025, reinforcing the mineral’s status as the country’s leading foreign exchange earner.

According to data from the Ministry of Finance Planning and Economic Development (MoFPED), the value of gold exports has grown steadily month by month, showing robust global demand and increased volumes moving through formal trading channels. In January 2025, Uganda earned USD 318.71 million from gold exports. Although this figure dipped slightly in February, earnings rebounded strongly in March, climbing to USD 385.08 million. The momentum continued with April and May posting USD 382.06 million and USD 485.83 million respectively — the highest monthly figure recorded so far this year.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) remains Uganda’s largest market for gold, accounting for a significant share of the country’s exports. In May 2025 alone, Uganda exported USD 411 million worth of goods to the UAE — the majority of which was gold.

Officials attribute the growth in gold export performance to improved regulatory oversight and enforcement measures implemented by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA). These measures have enhanced transparency and reduced informal trading, which had previously cast a shadow over Uganda’s gold trade due to concerns around traceability and illicit re-exports.

“While Uganda’s gold export figures have in the past drawn international scrutiny over smuggling and certification gaps, recent efforts to strengthen compliance and formalization are paying off,” said Truman Musinguzi, a Kampala-based economic analyst. “This trend signals confidence in Uganda’s gold as a legitimate global commodity.”

FAMReports News Desk | July 21, 2025

In a move that marks a significant shift in the telecom and financial services landscape in Uganda, shareholders of MTN Uganda have voted to separate the company’s mobile money operations from its core telecommunications business. The resolution was passed during an extraordinary general meeting held on Tuesday, signaling a new chapter for one of the country’s leading mobile operators.

The decision comes as part of MTN Group’s broader strategy to establish a dedicated Fintech entity which will consolidate its mobile financial services across Africa. According to MTN Uganda chairman Charles Mbiire, the aim is to unlock the full potential of the mobile money business by creating a separate, specialized platform capable of driving growth and attracting Fintech-focused investors.

“Fintech is different. It needs freedom and flexibility to grow,” Mr Mbiire said during the meeting. “By separating it, we are giving it room to innovate and lead.”

This structural transformation has been in preparation since 2020, and Tuesday’s vote represents a milestone in a multi-year journey to build a more agile and investor-attractive Fintech structure. The shift acknowledges the unique operational and regulatory nature of mobile financial services, which differ greatly from traditional telecom services.

MTN Uganda CEO Sylvia Mulinge described this as the second phase in a three-step journey toward full Fintech independence. The first step occurred in 2021 when MTN Uganda legally separated its mobile money business under the National Payment Systems Act. Now, with shareholder approval, the next phase involves engaging with regulators, merging the businesses into a new entity, and setting up an investor trust.

“This approval allows us to move forward with the next stage: engaging regulators, completing the structural separation, and officially establishing the new Fintech company and investor trust,” Ms Mulinge said.

The newly proposed Fintech company will be primarily owned by MTN Group Fintech Holdings B.V., while the remaining shares will be held in trust for Ugandan investors. The ultimate goal is to list this Fintech entity on the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) within three to five years, giving more Ugandans an opportunity to participate in the financial services growth story.

FAMReports News Desk | July, 2025

Entebbe International Airport has reported an extraordinary surge in passenger traffic, handling 213,217 international travelers in June 2025 alone, making it the second-highest monthly average in the airport’s operational history.

According to the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), this figure breaks down into 106,583 arrivals and 106,634 departures, translating to an average of 7,107 daily passengers. This daily throughput is only slightly lower than the record set in December 2024, when the airport averaged 7,171 passengers per day.

Speaking on the development, Mr Vianney Luggya, Manager of Public Affairs at UCAA, attributed the passenger growth to several contributing factors.
