The World Press Photo's 2025 Photo of the Year is a striking portrait of 9 year old Palestinian, Mahmoud Ajjour, captured by Samar Abu Elouf. With Gaza currently holding the devastating record for the highest rate of child amputees, this portrait not only documents an individual tragedy, but mirrors a collective trauma and the heavy cost of conflict.

Last evening we launched the 'Stories 4 Change' showcase at the Makerere Art Gallery.

For the past 2 years, FOTEA, organiser of the Uganda Press Photo Award, has been in partnership with Oxfam for the ‘Stories 4 Change’ project. Through this implementation we have been collaborating with young storytellers working within the creative industries in the fields of photography, videography, written word, illustration, audio and podcasting, to enhance their storytelling and collaborative skills.

The aim of this collaborative project was to reflect on the role of storytelling in impact-centred work, and to challenge to explore something “new”, whether a theme, medium, or approach in response to key themes.

This showcase is a collection of the work born from this process.

In case you missed the launch, we have an exhibition walk-through scheduled for tomorrow.

Walkthrough Details:

📅April 12th
⏱ 10AM
📍Makerere Art Gallery

The showcase is a multimedia endeavour and is open until April 19th.

Uganda Press Photo Award

The Uganda Press Photo Award (UPPA) was originally developed in 2012. It began as a competition for Ugandan photojournalists and photographers who strive to keep the public informed of the daily news, sometimes at great risk to themselves.

Over the years we’ve grown into a platform which not only promotes the best of today’s photojournalism and documentary photography in Uganda, but also supports a broad programme of visual literacy and visual education. We also seek to remind the viewing public of the importance of creativity, freedom of expression and vibrant press for democratic development.

The award soon became just one small part of a much larger organisation, and in 2016 we established the FOTEA Foundation to support the growing scale of the award and our other activities.

FOTEA aims to bring together photographers and other visual storytellers, to encourage and champion viewpoints that document and engage with social change in Uganda and East Africa.
