CHARACTERIZATION:
A screenplay is all about characterization. If you can remove a character (protagonist, antagonist or support) out of your story and it continues, then you don't have a screenplay but a situation however if you remove these characters from the story and it stalls, then you have a screenplay. Screenplays are driven by characters, characters drive the themes, themes drive the plot and plot determines the story arcs and there you have a screenplay.

FILM ANALOGY:
The secret in film is knowing how to marry the science and art of it.
The scientist uses technique while the artist uses creativity, however modern cinema requires both to be in sync (marriage).
Whereas Ronaldo is the scientist of football,Messi is the artist. There's no doubt the two can and have achieved greatly independently but a combination of the two makes infinite greatness.
It is also true that most people in film are either inclined towards the art or the technique. You don't need to be both because practically it might be impossible however being a part of the film process, it is very imperative that you identify your calling (strength), be it the art or the technique and then you have to seek collaboration with who you are not. In collaboration you then make the puzzle complete. Film is therefore identity and collaboration hence defining it's completeness.
