President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has paid tribute to Uganda's heroes and heroines, commemorating their sacrifices in the struggle for freedom, democracy, and national transformation.
In his Heroes Day message, Museveni noted that June 9 was chosen to symbolize the sacrifices made by hundreds of thousands of Ugandans who lost their lives during periods of conflict, particularly in the Luweero Triangle. He recalled that after the war, 32 communal graves were identified and the victims' skulls collected as a reminder of the atrocities endured by the population.
The President said that when the National Resistance Army (NRA) launched the liberation struggle, Uganda was facing severe economic decline, insecurity, governance challenges, and a lack of democratic freedoms.
According to Museveni, the movement's objectives were to restore democracy, guarantee security, rebuild and diversify the economy, and restore national stability.
He thanked both civilian and military veterans who participated in the liberation struggle and paid tribute to those who lost their lives, as well as their families.
Museveni said that while significant progress has been made, Uganda's next major challenge is achieving economic transformation and ensuring that every household participates in the money economy.
