As a result of hard work and dedication Felista Geniziyo, Viola Kojo Fortune and Irene Awekonimungu won the Overall Best Debate Trophy, Super Gladys Best Storyteller, and Arafa Best Public Speaker.

St. Thomas Aquinas College, Erepi in Moyo District has emerged as Uganda’s Overall Best School in Public Speaking at the 2026 National Debate, Public Speaking and Poetry Championship held from August 24–28 at St. Joseph of Nazareth High School, Mpigi.

Senior Six student Arafa Abdallah was crowned Overall Best Champion in Public Speaking and Overall Best Champion of the Tournament. The championship, organised by the Uganda Schools Debate Council in partnership with UNSA, attracted more than 100 schools and over 150 teams.

The victory caps three years of investment through the school’s Rock and Debate Club. Arafa, who has competed in about 11 tournaments and won eight awards and trophies, attributed her success to preparation and support from her school and coaches.

School Patron Steady Amadrio Emmanuella, Deputy Patron Consolate Masudio, and Co-Patron Desmond Odia credited discipline, mentorship, teamwork and preparation.

Founder Rev. Fr. Robert Seraph Aliunzi blessed the team, while Executive Director Joseph Ambayo presented gifts. Principal Godfrey Wabusimba said the achievement proves rural schools can compete at the highest level.

MY S1 EXPERIENCE πŸ“Œ

My name is Mambo . My Senior One experience is one I will never forget in my life. After completing my PLE in 2025, I joined Comboni Secondary School for my Senior One in February 2026.

On the first day, I reported to school very early with my Auntie . The school compound was very big and I was confused. I did not know where the S1 block was. Many students were walking around and I felt very small because everyone looked older than me. After admission, I was given my class, S1 red

The first week was not easy. In primary we had only four subjects but in S1 we have many subjects like Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, Mathematics and many others. The teachers were moving very fast and I had to write a lot of notes. I had to buy many books. I also had to learn new school rules like morning prep, evening prep and roll call.

Socially, it was also challenging. As S1s, the senior students called us β€œjuuka β€œSometimes they would send us to buy things for them. I missed my home especially during the first two weeks in boarding section. However, I made three good friends, tata , Peter and Moses, who helped me to adjust.

Academically, my first beginning of term exams were not good. I got 52% and I was in position 40 out of 65. I felt discouraged but my class teacher encouraged me to work harder. I started reading early morning and doing all my homework. By end of term one, I improved to position 5.

In conclusion, my S1 experience taught me to be independent, hardworking and respectful. Though it was hard at first, I now enjoy secondary school life in comboni . I have learned that success in secondary school needs discipline and determination. I hope to perform better in S.2.

Police in Moyo District have recovered the bodies of two men who were allegedly killed about a month ago and buried in Murula Village, Aluru Parish, Aluru Sub-County.

The deceased have been identified as;
1- 𝐈𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐚 π‰πšπ¦πžπ¬, 42years old, a resident of Pamoju South Village,
2- And another man whose identity is yet to be established, suspected to have been from Metu Sub-County.

Two suspects, Jurugo Paskayo and Sele Marino, have been arrested in connection with the alleged killings.

According to police, the suspects reportedly confessed to the killings, saying the victims had been accused of stealing cassava.

Police investigations are ongoing.
