IP is no longer Optional for Fashion Entrepreneurs

My participation in the WIPO–URSB IP Gamification Pilot Project (IP in a Box), came at the right time for Uganda’s fashion industry.

As a fashion industry leader and through the work of the Pearl of Africa Fashion Alliance (PAFA), we have been advocating for better fashion education standards, especially the need to improve and standardize our curriculum so that it reflects the realities of today’s fashion business. This campaign answers that call.

Through simple board and card games, entrepreneurs including my fashion designers were able to:
• Understand how to protect their designs, brand names, and collections
• Learn when and why to register trademarks and industrial designs
• Build IP strategies that support long-term business growth
• See IP not as theory, but as a practical business tool

This is how learning should happen, practical, engaging, and relevant.

To every fashion entrepreneur reading this:
Use IP as a tool to strengthen your business.

Creativity alone is no longer enough. Protection, strategy, and structure are what will help Ugandan fashion brands compete locally and globally.

At PAFA, we are proud to be part of this history-making initiative alongside and , and we are committed to integrating these IP games into our upcoming mentorship programs and IP clinics. Our goal is to make IP learning simple, accessible, and effective for every designer and fashion entrepreneur as we also Introduce Fashion Law in Uganda officially.

The future of fashion belongs to those who understand both creativity and ownership.

Today, I had the privilege of witnessing the launch of the “IP in a Box” Game Lab—a groundbreaking initiative by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) in partnership with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Uganda has officially become the first African country to roll out this Play–Learn–Protect model designed to help young innovators understand how to create, manage, and protect their ideas. This is more than a learning tool, it’s a national shift toward empowering a new generation of creators with practical Intellectual Property knowledge.

As the Registrar General, Ms. Mercy K. Kainobwisho, noted:
“Uganda becomes the first African country to launch the IP in a Box project, a milestone worth celebrating.”

I am proud that members of the Pearl of Africa Fashion Alliance (PAFA) were invited to be part of this historical, interactive learning experience at the Uganda Business Facilitation Centre. For an industry built on originality and innovation, this is a vital opportunity.

It is inspiring to see Uganda intentionally investing in its youth, creators, designers, and future innovators. And I am honoured to see PAFA walk alongside WIPO and URSB in this important journey.

The future of Uganda’s creative economy is bright, and protected.

On Saturday, I had the privilege of serving as a judge for the Tunga, Stitch, and Style Competitions hosted by Brainspire Volunteers Africa at the Nsambya Sharing Youth Centre. With over 13 finalists showcasing their creativity, this initiative reaffirmed the power of mentorship, talent development, and sustainability within Uganda’s growing fashion ecosystem.

These young designers demonstrated passion and potential, integrating themes of sustainability, creativity, elegance, and climate-conscious innovation. The boot camp that preceded the competition was a brilliant idea, equipping students with skills that extend far beyond technical tailoring.

However, as a judge and industry leader, I must continue advocating for better professional standards. I highlighted key areas that need improvement:

- Stronger design stories supported by mood boards to prove originality
- Collection coherence from concept to ex*****on
- Proper model selection that aligns with the garments
- Eliminating personal accessories worn by models during showcases

These gaps are not new. At many local fashion events, I see avoidable mistakes rooted in limited training, lack of guidance, and the absence of structured industry standards. This is why the Pearl of Africa Fashion Alliance (PAFA) remains committed to raising the bar by building frameworks, educating models, supporting designers, and discouraging unethical practices across the industry.

Yet for every gap, there is hope, and Saturday reminded me of that. The energy, curiosity, and resilience of these young creatives were inspiring.

To my surprise and deep gratitude, I was honored with the Lifetime Impact Award for my contribution to social and environmental change through creativity, mentorship, innovation, and community empowerment. I do not take this recognition for granted.

Thank you to Brainspire Volunteers Africa and all organizers for creating a meaningful platform that uplifts the next generation of fashion talents. Uganda’s fashion future is bright if we continue building, correcting, educating, and believing.

Here’s to a more empowered, ethical, and sustainable Ugandan fashion industry.
Let’s keep the momentum alive.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of joining the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) in welcoming the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Mr. Daren Tang, to Uganda.

The experience was powerful, inspiring, and deeply affirming of the work we continue to champion within the fashion industry through the Pearl of Africa Fashion Alliance (PAFA).

From the innovative prototypes showcased by brilliant young minds, to the official launch of the IP in Schools Project, it is clear that Uganda is making bold steps toward building a future where creativity and innovation are protected, valued, and scaled.

Listening to insights from Mr. Tang, Hon. Norbert Mao, Amb. Francis Butagira, and Ms. Mercy K. Kainobwisho reminded me of one undeniable truth:

👉 Intellectual Property is the new currency of modern economies.
And for the fashion industry—built entirely on originality—IP protection is not optional; it is foundational.

I am grateful to URSB for continuously considering PAFA as a key stakeholder in national IP initiatives. Your partnership and belief in the potential of the fashion sector have helped us elevate the message of Creative Ownership across Uganda.

Thank you for inviting me and our nominated members to be part of this historic moment.
The journey continues—and we remain committed to building a fashion industry that is protected, respected, and future-ready.

Yesterday’s PAFA meetup with of and visual artist/Photographer .6 left us energized and deeply inspired.

We talked about where our industry is, where it needs to go, and what must be done to protect, elevate, and celebrate our creative heritage. Uganda’s fashion story is rich, powerful, and rooted in culture, and it deserves a bold new chapter.

Behind the scenes, we’re building something meaningful… something that honors our artisans, strengthens sustainable fashion, and uplifts the communities who have carried our traditions with pride.

We’re not revealing it yet, but just know:
A breakthrough is coming.
A shift that will celebrate our heritage.
A movement that will empower those who create with their hands, their hearts, and their history.

To every designer, artisan, storyteller, and lover of Ugandan culture, stay close.
The future we’ve dreamed about is getting closer every day.

— Moving Uganda’s fashion forward.

Celebrating a New Milestone in Ugandan Fashion

Today as we dive into a new Month of October, I had the privilege of visiting the new Sawe Creations Fashion House location with , a pageant queen from Buganda.

On Saturday, October 11th, Sawe will officially launch her new space,a bold step that reflects her strength, resilience, and vision for Uganda’s fashion industry.

Catherine Sawe is not only an individual member of the Pearl of Africa Fashion Alliance (PAFA) , but also serves as our Fashion Designer Liaison, a role in which she continues to inspire and advocate for the growth of the sector.

Her commitment to eco-friendly practices and her unwavering support for the “Buy Uganda, Build Uganda” initiative make her a trailblazer. By blending organic textures, cultural storytelling, and modern silhouettes, she is creating a unique identity for Ugandan fashion.

From her recent showcase of a baby collection at the Brand Protection Symposium to the successful registration of her brand trademark, Sawe continues to chart a transformative journey of greatness.

I am very proud of you, , for this new chapter. May your journey inspire more designers to dream big, work sustainably, and proudly wear Uganda to the world.

Let’s all stand with her as she opens this new door for the future of Ugandan fashion.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of visiting ’s factory in Kasangati. Together with (Costume Designer), we experienced firsthand the remarkable work of Dimma’s team of weavers and young creatives.

Using banana fibres, organic cotton, and textile waste (including offcuts and second-hand clothes), Dimma is tackling the challenges of fast fashion with bold, sustainable solutions. His dedication recently earned him recognition as the Most Innovative & Outstanding Designer at the Brand Protection Symposium, organized by URSB & PAFA.

I was deeply inspired, especially after watching his interview on CNN’s “Inside Africa” where he spoke passionately about sustainable fashion — and today, I saw that vision in action.

I am proud to share that will now join our mentor team for the Fashion Futures — Turning Ambition into Achievement Mentorship Program by the Pearl of Africa Fashion Alliance (PAFA). Together, we will nurture Uganda’s next generation of designers, ensuring that sustainability, innovation, and originality define their future.

Uganda’s fashion industry is on the rise — and it starts with visionaries like Dimma.

It was an honor to host my good friend Derrick Kuttos Lukoye .kuttos at the Brand Protection Symposium 2025.

Kuttos is a true fashion entrepreneur, logistics and tech innovator, brand builder, and founder of the Kuttos Fashion Store .store . He is among the few, if not the very first, Ugandan entrepreneurs to embrace e-commerce strategies ,marketing and selling his brand on Facebook long before it became the trend.

We thank him for gracing the symposium and look forward to seeing him join our PAFA community of fashion innovators. The journey to protecting and growing Uganda’s fashion brands is stronger with pioneers like him!

After weeks of preparation, reaching out to fashion entrepreneurs, and explaining the benefits of joining the Pearl of Africa Fashion Alliance (PAFA), our efforts culminated in success at the Brand Protection Symposium 2025.

The fashion industry in Uganda presents unique challenges — especially the hesitation by many to associate their craft with government-led initiatives. Yet, what consumed my team and me with sleepless nights has now become a triumph, not just for us, but for the entire industry.

I firmly believe we must invest not only in glamour but also in events and activities that provide real value propositions for the growth and sustainability of our fashion sector.

Receiving this Certificate of Appreciation from the Registrar General of URSB, Ms. Mercy K. Kainobwisho, is more than an honor — it is a milestone in my journey and a renewed commitment to building this nascent industry into a globally competitive one.

This recognition strengthens my resolve to keep pushing boundaries, uniting creatives, and ensuring that Uganda’s fashion industry is not just seen, but respected and protected.

The Pearl of Africa Fashion Alliance (PAFA) was honored with a Certificate of Appreciation presented by the Registrar General, Ms. Mercy K. Kainobwisho.

This recognition, given on behalf of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau URSB , affirms the value of Pearl of Africa Fashion Alliance (PAFA) ’s role as a partner and organizer in driving forward the national conversation on brand protection, intellectual property, and innovation in the fashion industry.

For me personally, this moment is more than just a certificate — it is a testament to the journey we began with the Creative Ownership Campaign, and proof that when government and industry collaborate, we can unlock real opportunities for creatives.

I extend my sincere gratitude to URSB for trusting PAFA, and to every designer, entrepreneur, and stakeholder who made the symposium a success. This is just the beginning — together, we are building an industry that is recognized, protected, and globally competitive.
