Most Ugandan athletes retire with memories, Not wealth.

I know this because I lived it.

From the courts with Miracle Eagles to now working in fashion, one truth has became clear that “Talent builds fame. It does not build wealth.”

The real question is uncomfortable:
Why are Uganda’s basketball legends, players who defined generations, not among the richest athletes today?

It’s not because we lacked greatness. It’s because we lacked ownership.
No trademarks.
No image rights.
No licensing structures.

So our names built culture, but never built capital.

As we approach World IP Day tomorrow with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau URSB under the theme “Ready, Set, Innovate,” this is the shift athletes must make:

Be ready to understand your value.
Get set to protect it.
And innovate by monetizing it.

I’ve broken this down using real Ugandan scenarios and practical steps for athletes, federations, and policymakers.

This is not just a conversation, it’s a correction.

I recently had the honor of judging Mr & Miss Cavendish 2026—and it left me thinking deeply.

We have talent. We have platforms. But are we building impact?

University pageants in Uganda are growing fast, yet many still lack structure, direction, and long-term value for contestants and institutions.

This is a conversation we must have.

I’ve shared my thoughts on:
• What’s missing
• Why regulation matters
• How pageantry can shape future leaders

I had a truly engaging and timely conversation with (Vivian Katusabe) on the Social Spotlight Podcast, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.

At a time when conversations around copyright are gaining momentum across the country, platforms like this are playing a critical role in shaping understanding within the creative industry.

We explored an important question: Is the Copyright Bill a hoax?
And more importantly, what it really means for creatives trying to earn, protect, and grow their work.

What stood out for me is this:
The conversation is shifting, and that’s where real change begins.

My appreciation to Vivian for creating space for honest, necessary, and forward-thinking dialogue.
These are the kinds of conversations that will move our industry from uncertainty to structure.

Because in the end, creativity must not only be expressed, it must be protected and monetized.

Tomorrow morning, I’ll be live on NTV Uganda discussing a critical issue:

What copyright law really means for the arts and fashion industry.

Too many creatives are talented, but still losing money, control, and ownership of their work.

This conversation is about changing that.

If you are a:

• Designer
• Model
• Photographer
• stylist

Then this affects you directly.

I have been thinking deeply about what just happened in Parliament.

The Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2025 has finally been passed by the Parliament of Uganda, and for many creatives, this is a moment of hope.

But let me bring it closer to home.

Imagine a young designer in Kalerwe or Ntinda.

She spends nights sketching a design, saves money to produce one outfit, posts it online… and within weeks, her design is copied, reproduced, and sold in “downtown shops—without her consent, without “credit, without payment.

That has been the reality for many in our fashion industry.

This new law is a step in the right direction. It signals that Uganda is ready to take creative work seriously.
But laws alone are not enough.

As the Pearl of Africa Fashion Alliance ( ), we see this as the beginning of a new phase—implementation.

Fashion is not just clothing. It is an ecosystem of designers, models, photographers, stylists, and creatives whose work must be recognized, protected, and valued.

If we get implementation right, we will build an industry where creativity is respected and rewarded.
If we get it wrong, we risk leaving an entire sector behind.

The work continues, and we are ready to engage.

Proud to see this important milestone take shape for Uganda’s fashion industry.

The launch of the Models & Agents Guild by the Pearl of Africa Fashion Alliance (PAFA) marks a step toward a more professional, ethical, and structured modelling sector.

For too long, many models have faced challenges such as exploitation, lack of contracts, and limited career pathways. Through dialogue, research, and collaboration with models themselves, we are beginning to build systems that protect talent, promote dignity, and open global opportunities.

Models are not just faces on the runway, they are ambassadors of Uganda’s creative excellence.

This is just the beginning.

Hhhh… this picture reminds me that the work I do today is building the legacy I’ll live tomorrow.

Fashion legacy isn’t only built on the runway.
It’s built in early mornings at my table.
Late-night fittings.
Starting with limited resources.
Choosing to continue when no one is clapping.

To every creative in Uganda’s fashion industry, every stitch, every production, every person you mentor, every platform you create is shaping our future.

We’re not just designing clothes.
We’re designing standards.
We’re building systems.
We’re creating global relevance for Ugandan fashion.

Let’s collaborate more.
Let’s protect our craft.
Let’s professionalize the industry.

Uganda’s fashion story is being written now as I speak...

Honoured to have served as one of the judges for the IP Strategy Business Pitch Challenge during the recently concluded first-ever IP in a Box (Play, Learn, Protect) Game Lab.

It was inspiring to assess innovative, youth-driven ideas that demonstrated a growing understanding of how Intellectual Property can be strategically applied to real businesses.

I appreciated the opportunity to judge alongside an incredible panel: Ms. Sarah Rukundo (URSB), Ms. Lilian Nantume (Founder & MD, GSWIM), Mr. Ajit Abraham (URSB), and Ms. Clara Tumwine (URSB).

Thank you to and for creating such a practical and forward-looking platform that makes IP learning engaging, relevant, and impactful for entrepreneurs and creatives.

This is the direction we need to take as we build a stronger, protected, and future-ready innovation ecosystem.

IP is no longer Optional for Fashion Entrepreneurs

My participation in the WIPO–URSB IP Gamification Pilot Project (IP in a Box), came at the right time for Uganda’s fashion industry.

As a fashion industry leader and through the work of the Pearl of Africa Fashion Alliance (PAFA), we have been advocating for better fashion education standards, especially the need to improve and standardize our curriculum so that it reflects the realities of today’s fashion business. This campaign answers that call.

Through simple board and card games, entrepreneurs including my fashion designers were able to:
• Understand how to protect their designs, brand names, and collections
• Learn when and why to register trademarks and industrial designs
• Build IP strategies that support long-term business growth
• See IP not as theory, but as a practical business tool

This is how learning should happen, practical, engaging, and relevant.

To every fashion entrepreneur reading this:
Use IP as a tool to strengthen your business.

Creativity alone is no longer enough. Protection, strategy, and structure are what will help Ugandan fashion brands compete locally and globally.

At PAFA, we are proud to be part of this history-making initiative alongside and , and we are committed to integrating these IP games into our upcoming mentorship programs and IP clinics. Our goal is to make IP learning simple, accessible, and effective for every designer and fashion entrepreneur as we also Introduce Fashion Law in Uganda officially.

The future of fashion belongs to those who understand both creativity and ownership.
