Yesterday, we commemorated 140 years since representatives of 13 nations in Europe and the United States met on 15 November 1884 in Berlin to lay down rules to guide them in the scramble for Africa. The signing of "The General Act of Berlin" on 26 February 1885 formalised European colonisation of Africa. Contrary to widespread belief, the delegates did not sit at a table with pencils and rulers to draw current African boundaries.

After agreeing on how they will possess territories in Africa, it took two decades to draw boundaries of their possessions, which were fully recognized and adopted by African leaders in July 1964 in Cairo. Since then African leaders have fully committed to respect these colonial boundaries despite having been drawn in the interests of Europeans. Ironically, we continue to blame these colonial boundaries for being sources of disputes between African countries yet we have declared them sacrosanct and inviolable.

It's absurd to continue blaming Europeans for 60 years for engaging in an act that suited their interests while doing nothing to remake African boundaries to reflect African interests. It's only on current African boundaries where colonial history persists and is passionately celebrated by Africans.

As we acknowledge this historic day, let's also remember that African boundaries are now African and Africans bear the primary responsibility of making them to work for Africa. No more blaming Berlin conference of 15 November 1884-26 February 1885 for our inability to transform colonial boundaries to African boundaries.

1. There is something in life called "Social Capital" (SC)

2. SC is about the people you know; the people who know you and how they know you.

3. Quite unfortunate, people think or behave like SC is only needed on weddings, burials and other celebrations.

4. That is why you see someone who has not contacted you in many years suddenly sending you a message saying "hello so and so, long time".

5. Then, they indicate that on a specific day they will have their pre-wedding function and they need your support.

6. SC is not built overnight; it is an investment that takes time and is reciprocative.

7. It just needs being sensitive to people's emotions and concerns not sneaking into their lives only when help is needed.

8. SC is very important and when it is built and used correctly, it makes a big difference in one's life.

9. It can save you money, make you money, get you a better job, make things easier, save you from prison, or save your life.

10. SC can save you time and effort and make life more enjoyable and productive.

11. Creating a connection with people is important for building social capital.

12. And even if they don't respond, at least keep in touch and don't just reach out when you are in need.

13. As we progress through the second part of this year, let us learn to connect with people in our circles.

14. Check on people, check on their progress and say something positive and inspirational to them.

15. Pick your phone and call someone, or text them....it would be your relative, your colleague, your former schoolmate, your current or former boss, your CEO, your admin, your colleagues at work or even your parents.

16. Most importantly, respect everyone irrespective of their status in life.

17. Be there when others need you and be a solution, an encouragement and an inspiration.

18. Avoid being a stress factor, a leech, a snitch, a spy, under dog, a user or nagger.

19. Just be nice in a calculated deliberate ways.

20. Keep and stay in touch with people and bring joy, happiness, encouragement and hope to them.

21. SC is the most important asset you have in life.

"S.C is also called Connection"

It's very vital in life's journey because no man is an island. No matter how rich, some things need a check not a cheque.

My name is "Tomorrow" not my real name, I own a company, none of my staff knew me as the owner except the Manager and the Secretary. (I had told them not to disclose my identity). I don't usually go for a visit.

One day, I visited the company and I saw my Ex wife, who had thrown me out of my own house. I asked the Manager and he said she is one of their staff. I instructed the Manager to promote her to Personnel Officer, gave her a car, a bungalow, garden boy, security and other emoluments. An undeserved position though, of which he did.

A month later, I went there as a job seeker. As soon as she saw me with my application and CV, she rejected me outright, threw my application at my face, and immediately retrieved it from the floor and tore it to pieces and threw it into the waste bin. After regaling me with all my past, she informed me I would never get employment nor an opportunity at the company. Also, she swore on heaven and the earth that all this would happen. She boldly declared that the only way I’d get employment at the company was over her cold dead body. I came the following day with another application and went on my knees to beg her, but she refused and spat into the waste bin and said even if I was the only bridge to cross to come to work, she would opt for a boat and called the security men to throw me out, so I left.

One day, I went to the company in my real identity and entered her office with the Manager who introduced me to her, she quickly knelt down crying and begging me, "The proposed rejected bridge.” She informed me that her entire family depended on her for survival. If her employment was terminated, she added, life would be absolutely horrendous not only for her but also her entire family. She even promised to remarry me. We both stood there motionless and speechless which left the Manager befuddled.

Many things started racing in my head. Should I call for the police? Should I strip her of her current position to her former position? Should I cancel the unqualified benefits given to her? Should I accept such a woman back?
I'm still standing at her office indecisive.
If you were in my shoes, what would you do?

THERE IS TOMORROW

Whenever you are dealing with people, you must always remember that there is tomorrow and you might néed them tomorrow. You may end up needing help from the people who are asking for your help today, so help as much as you can.

Life is like a moving wheel, sometimes you are up and sometimes you are down. Sometimes we destroy the bridges that we might need to help us cross back tomorrow. Sometimes we treat people as though there is never going to be tomorrow. We sometimes act as though we will never need help from anyone. Remember there's tomorrow.

Yusuf helped the cupbearer in prison and later the cupbearer connected Yusuf with Pharaoh. Imagine how Portiphar's wife felt when she heard that Yusuf was now the Governor of Egypt, after she had falsely accused him. The brother who sold Yusuf away ended up being fed by him. Don't ever think of going to the extreme with your offenders, they might be rescuers tomorrow. Always remember that there is tomorrow and it will surely come.

The little help you give to people today, will profit you tomorrow. May the good Lord touch your heart to live your life knowing that there is tomorrow. In Everything You Do, Always Remember That,There Is Tomorrow.

If milk gets bad, it becomes yoghurt. Yoghurt is more valuable than milk. If it gets even worse, it turns to cheese. Cheese is more valuable than both yoghurt and milk. And if grape juice turns sour, it transforms into wine, which is even more expensive than grape juice. You are not bad because you made mistakes. Mistakes are the experiences that make you more valuable as a person. Christopher Columbus made a navigational error that made him discover America. Alexander Fleming’s mistake led him to invent Penicillin. Don’t let your mistakes get you down. It is not practice that makes perfect. It is mistakes we learn from that makes perfect!

Have a great weekend
