The latest escalation has seen the strategic city of Uvira in South Kivu Province and surrounding areas fall into rebel hands, forcing soldiers of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and allied forces to retreat southwards toward Kalemie.

"Fishermen worry over Museveni fishing plan"

HE President Museveni said fishing is not the only way to earn a living from fish and urged fishermen to consider fish farming, which he described as a profitable venture that requires little land.

The National Resistance Movement presidential candidate, Mr Yoweri Museveni, has proposed limiting the number of people fishing on Lake Albert, a move that has sparked concern among fishing communities who fear it could threaten their livelihoods. Speaking to fishermen in Kikuube District, Mr Museveni, the incumbent, said the government plans to hold consultations aimed at determining how many people should be allowed to fish on the lake and under what conditions.

"FPU boss denies campaigning for Museveni, reopens Masaka landing sites"

The government has reopened four of the 12 landing sites in Masaka District that were closed nine years ago, sparking mixed reactions from political leaders and fishing communities. The reopening followed lobbying by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) flagbearer for Bukoto East Member of Parliament, Ms Sarah Kityo, and Ms Joan Nalule, an aspirant for the Masaka District Woman Member of Parliament seat.

The reopened landing sites include Makonzi, Mitondo, Nakitokolo, and Kisuku, which are all located in Bukakkata Sub-county. While announcing the development on Thursday at Makonzi landing site, the Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) commandant, Lt Col Mercy Tukahirwa, said the sites are allowed to resume normal operations on condition that fishermen strictly adhere to fishing regulations. She also ordered the immediate removal of roadblocks that had been erected on roads leading to the landing sites to enable smooth operations.

“Mukula’s son runs as independent for Soroti City East MP seat”

Often donned in a white shirt and black trousers in his public appearances, many, including his political rivals, were left in disbelief, questioning why the son of the region’s top-most NRM mobilisers abandoned and deviated from his father’s party to run for the parliamentary seat under an independent ticket.
