The Engineering Department of Lira Regional Referral Hospital (LRRH) has innovated a Baby Transporter machine designed to safely transport neonates, particularly premature babies, from the labour suite and theatre to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

The innovative Baby Transporter is fitted with CPAP oxygen cylinders to provide neonates with the required oxygen levels during transportation, thereby enhancing their safety and continuity of care during the critical transfer period.

The Baby Transporter was handed over to the Senior Consultant Paediatrician, Dr. William Oyang, on Wednesday, 27 August 2026, by the Head of the Engineering Department, Eng. Phillip Ddungu.

Speaking during the handover, Dr. Oyang applauded the Hospital Engineering team for the innovation, noting that the Baby Transporter will improve the prognosis of neonates and help prevent brain damage and other life-threatening complications that may occur during the transfer of premature babies to the NICU.

Sr. Betty Apio, the In-charge of the Labour Suite, said the unit has, for a long time, faced challenges in transferring premature babies from the labour suite to the NICU. She noted that the new innovation will make the process easier, safer and more efficient, while reducing the risks associated with neonatal transportation.

According to Eng. Phillip Ddungu, Head of the Engineering Department, the Baby Transporter was developed to improve the safety of neonates during transportation to the NICU.
He further explained that the transporter will be fitted with temperature monitors and other vital ICU equipment to enhance the monitoring and management of neonates throughout the transfer process.

Lira Regional Referral Hospital admits an average of 1,100 neonates annually, underscoring the importance of innovations aimed at improving neonatal care and outcomes.

The innovation comes shortly after the NICU was commissioned to Level III in June, expanding its capacity to manage complicated neonatal cases and provide advanced care to critically ill newborns.

The Baby Transporter innovation demonstrates Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s commitment to strengthening quality healthcare delivery through locally developed solutions that improve patient safety and outcomes.

On Sunday, 21st June, Dr. Rosemary Alwoc-Ogwal and her team joined Christians for worship at St. Mary's Church of Uganda and St. Joseph Catholic Chapel, Adok, in Dokolo District.

In support of ongoing church development projects, the team contributed a combined total of UGX 1 million.

The team also visited and spent time with two families caring for patients diagnosed with malaria and typhoid. As a gesture of support, a combined contribution of UGX 200,000 was made towards the patients' medical expenses.

Dr. Alwoc-Ogwal reaffirmed her commitment to supporting community initiatives and standing with families during challenging times.

UPDATE: Earlier today, Hon Dr. Mercy Faith Lakisa was duly sworn-in as the Woman Member of Parliament representing Alebtong District in the 12th Parliament of Uganda.

Dr.Lakisa who is a dental surgeon and former Vice President of in her post inauguration speech, pledged for better representation and improved service delivery.

In her first months in Parliament, Dr Lakisa told Voice of Lango Fm that, she will prioritise upgrade of Alebtong Health Centre IV to General Hospital status and upgrading other Health Center IIIs to Health Center IV, improved quality education, wealth creation and better social services.

The legacy of Cecilia Atim Ogwal lives on as her family supports the rebuilding of Awany Yahweh Pentecostal Mission Church in Dokolo, destroyed by a rainstorm.

Led by Rosemary Alwoc-Ogwal, the family together with partners donated 33 bags of cement in the first phase, with more support expected in August 2026. Over 1,500 worshippers have been struggling to raise UGX 26M and are currently praying under a mango tree.

The gesture continues Ogwal’s long-standing philanthropy in church construction, education, and community support across Lango.

The launch was witnessed by US Embassy Deputy Head of Mission in Uganda Mikael Cleverly, Dr Richard Kabanda who represented the Director General of Health Services Prof Charles Olaro, Lira Regional Referral Hospital Director Dr Andrew Odur, Partners and Lira City leaders.

Lira Regional Referral Hospital Secures UGX 4.8 Billion additional wage for Staff Recruitment in FY 26/27

Lira Regional Referral Hospital has secured an additional UGX 4.8 billion to facilitate the recruitment of over 100 new staff in the 2026/2027 financial year.

The Hospital Director, Dr. Andrew Odur, made the announcement on Wednesday, 8th April 2026, during the maiden State of the Hospital Address at the 156th sitting of the LRR Hospital Parliament, held in the administration block boardroom.

Dr. Odur noted that the funds will support the recruitment of a wide range of health professionals, including consultants, associate consultants, nurses, midwives, allied health workers and common cadres. This support is expected to significantly boost staffing levels from the current 320 to nearly 420 personnel.

“In the next financial year, we are going to recruit more than 100 staff following the allocation of an additional UGX 4.8 billion for recruitment,” Dr. Odur stated.

He further outlined key unfunded priorities for the hospital remain expanding ward space through a new ward complex, reclamation of 10.4 acres of encroached hospital land, completion of the hospital fencing, and construction of a big store to safely keep our medicines and other health supplies.

On specialized healthcare services, Dr. Odur revealed that the hospital is strengthening capacity to offer advanced care in areas such as fertility treatment, neonatology, cardiology, neurotrauma, pediatric surgery, endoscopy and minimal access surgery.

Ongoing projects set for completion before the end of the current financial year include the extension of the private wing, renovation of the eye department and remodeling, paving of part of Police Road, equipping of the theatre, and construction of canopies along major walkways within the hospital.

Reflecting on the past year, Dr. Odur highlighted several achievements, including the construction of a fully-fledged satellite laboratory now internationally accredited by SANAS, expansion of a 45-bed gynecology ward, operationalization of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and the successful performance of 174 head surgeries of accident and stroke patients under neurotrauma program

However, he raised concern over the high disease burden recorded, including 7,592 malaria cases, 1,742 urinary tract infections, and 1,038 sickle cell disease cases.

In his closing remarks, the Speaker of the Hospital Parliament, Dr. Bosco Omongo, urged hospital leadership to engage the Ministries of Health and Finance to secure additional funding to support the hospital’s upgrade, especially if Lira City is to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.

Dr. Omongo also emphasized the urgent need for the construction of a city mortuary, noting that the current facility at the hospital is overwhelmed, with a capacity of only 12 bodies at a time.
