Big fish caught
A prominent cattle farmer one Garuhanga Joseph has been arrested and detained awaiting arraignment before court for encroaching on and destroying Kaitokono swamp. The swamp stretches through Musaijamukuru East and West, Ruhunga, Kinogozi, Kyabatalya parishes in Buhimba sub county, Kikuube district.
Mr. Garuhanga was arrested on Tuesday evening during a joint inspection of the degraded wetland by officials from National Environment Management Authority-NEMA, Kikuube district Environment officer, Ministry of water and Environment and among others.
Mrs. Christine Ainebyona, the field Manager for National Environment Management Authority Albertine region Office located in Mparo, Hoima city she expressed concern that most of the wetlands in the region are being reclaimed by encroaches practicing crop growing, animal husbandry, logging among others.
She said the suspects will be arraigned before court to act as a deterrent to others who work against the Environmental Act that the National Environment Management Authority follows.
Wilfred Abitegeka, the Kikuube district Environment Officer expressed concern over the rampant encroachment of wetlands in the area saying similar operations are ongoing.
