WHY YOUR TV STATION SIGNAL KEEPS DROPPING (ESPECIALLY DURING RAIN)
Someone recently asked me a very good question:
“Why does our TV station signal go off and on especially when it rains?”
Here’s the thing:
In Uganda, all TV stations send their signal to SIGNET.
This is usually done through a microwave link from your studio to a transmission centre.
So, if your viewers are complaining of signal cutting in and out, going off completely when it rains, or being generally unstable then most likely, the problem is right at your first connection to SIGNET.
What Usually Causes It?
1. Weak Microwave Link
Could be poor line of sight, small antennas, or using cheap, unstable equipment.
2. Rain Fade:
If your link uses high frequency (above 11GHz) and isn’t properly configured, heavy rain will knock it out.
3. Improper Setup:
Misaligned antennas, loose connectors, or even moisture in the cables can mess everything up.
4. Poor-Quality Encoders:
If your encoder isn’t stable or DVB-compliant, it won’t send a consistent signal — even on a sunny day.
What’s the SOLUTION?
- Use a proper, licensed microwave link with good alignment and clear line of sight.
- Invest in a broadcast-grade, DVB-compliant encoder.
- Don’t rely on general IT guys, this is a broadcast signal, and it needs people who know broadcast engineering.
