A NEW NAME, A NEW SOUND, A NEW STAR: KOYA.
Koya, who many knew as Gloria Beries, started out singing with different bands in Mbale. She became known for her smooth covers of popular songs and was even called “Mbale’s Rema” because of her voice. In 2023 she joined the Bukedde TV singing competition and finished as second runner-up, showing the whole country her talent.
The Music World She Is Joining
Ugandan music keeps growing, with more listeners loving sounds that mix African rhythms with emotion and soul. This is where Koya fits naturally. Her voice carries a calm but powerful feeling that connects well with today’s AfroSoul sound.
The Rebrand
In 2025 she was signed by The Native Music Label, and that is when she took on the name “Koya.”
In Lugisu or Lumasaba, Koya means “brewing.” It is a name that fits her perfectly because her music feels like something slowly and beautifully coming together, full of warmth and emotion, just like a good brew.
Under this new identity she released her first single, “Nga Nakonele,” written by Singer/lyricist Biya and produced by Nase Avatar on 17th November. The song is a heartfelt AfroSoul love story that reminds us of the real, deep love many people long for today.
Why Her Rise Is Important
Koya is a strong reminder that great talent can come from anywhere, not only Kampala. She carries the spirit of Mbale and Eastern Uganda with pride. Her style is real and relatable, and many listeners feel connected to her honesty and emotion.
What To Expect
Her journey is just beginning. With the right support, more music and her natural gift, she has everything she needs to grow into one of Uganda’s loved artists.
