MOURNERS TO DANCE IFUUMBO AT UMUKUUKA WAMIMBI’S FUNERAL
_____________
Umukuuka Amb. Wilson Weasa Wamimbi will be laid to rest on Saturday, April 20, 2024 in Busano, Mbale District amidst the sounding of Ifuumbo drums.

The news of Ifuumbo has excited mourners in Masaabaland. According to the report by Dr. Florence Wakoko, North America Masaba Cultural Association (NAMCA) has, among other things, contributed towards Ifumbo and two bulls for the funeral fete.

Ifuumbo (Ingoma ye Baafu) will be sounded for two days (Friday and Saturday) at the funeral grounds in Busano in respect and honour of the fallen cultural leader.

Ifuumbo is an old funeral dance in Masaabaland where drums are sounded during the last funeral rites of elderly and respectable men who produced male children. Men who braved the knife and produced sons were highly respected and accorded “powerful” burial ceremonies when they died. Sounding Ifuumbo on Umukuuka burial is the greatest send-off honour.

Government of Uganda has accorded Wamimbi an Official Burial with a cash contribution of UGX.159,675,000 in recognition of his service to the country.

An Official Funeral means that:

 The deceased will be honoured by a motion in Parliament by the Prime Minister;
 The National Anthem will be played and the deceased’s coffin will be draped with the national flag;
 A Condolence Book will be placed at a designated place and at all Uganda Diplomatic Missions abroad;
 An appropriate government representative will attend the funeral.

Umukuuka Amb. Wilson Weasa Wamimbi will be laid to rest on Saturday, April 20, 2024 in Busano, Mbale District.

Wamimbi was the First Cultural Leader, Umukuuka 1, of Inzu ya Masaaba, First LCV of Mbale District, that covered the entire Bugisu subregion. He also served as Uganda’s Ambassador to Canada and RDC Iganga District.

Book Overview
------------

Masaabaland is considered not just an amazing sight but the Genesisian Eden where our “Adam and Eve,” Mundu and Seera, sprouted and lived. It is the land believed to be a sacred place and a central part of BaMasaaba creation myth. It is considered a holy place, a cultural symbol and a source of livelihood. Wagagai peak is believed to connect heaven and earth.

Masaabaland; So Amazing provides powerful clues and sheds light on our ancestry, origins, beliefs, cultural practices and our place in history. He paints a picture of a proud and powerful people, of endearing and emotive cultural practices, and of anachronous activities that still find a place in the lives of our people. There is nothing else in the world like our circumcision ceremonies. There is absolutely nothing else like our courtship practices or our reverence for our land.

Mukhwana picks up all these threads of our lives and weaves a powerful story of a people yearning for their rightful place in the world. He may not have the answers to all our questions, but he has set the stage for historians, politicians, geographers, philosophers, and yes, students, to delve further, research more and write more.

The book is an important commentary, record, archive and reference material for the present and all future generations. It is a perfect gift that he is bequeathing to posterity. The book contains an accurate exposition of our culture written in simple English without the scholarly verbiage, jargonry, poetry and literary lingua of earlier works on this important subject.

With its grammatical simplicity, it is reader-friendly and can meet the needs of a wide range of readership. From elementary school to university, from cultural enthusiasts to Professors of cultural anthropology, from our hamlets and villages to cosmopolitans, from Mutoto in Mbale Uganda to Mabanga in Bungoma Kenya, from the foot of Lukingi Masaaba to its peak, from our tribesmen to our countrymen, and throughout Masaabaland, this book is of immense anthropological and cultural significance in terms of the cultural future of our people. This is the kind of book everyone, every household, every institution in Masaabaland and the diaspora should have.
