Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported:
The Prophet ﷺ said,
"When one of you gets up at night to perform (Tahajjud) prayer, let him start the prayer with two short Rak'ah."
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith Number 768)
Benefits from the Hadith:
• The night prayer is an honor for the believer and its virtues are tremendous. It is the best prayer to be performed after the five obligatory prayers.
• In this hadith the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ explains that one should begin their night prayers with two light rak’ah and this is to remove the desire to sleep as a light action is more suitable for removing it due to the actions within it.
• It maybe that the one who starts off their night prayer with two prolonged rak’ah would feel that these two rak’ah are heavy which would then result in the person shortening the remainder of their night prayer.
• If someone begins their night prayer with two short rak’ah then he has prepared himself for the remainder of the night prayer in which he can progressively increase the length of the rak’ah because with the completion of these two light rak’ah the last knot that was tied by Shaytaan in the evening is now removed by the completion of these two rak’ah.
