Trump urges Gaza war to end ‘immediately’ in UN General Assembly speech.

The US president meets Arab and Muslim leaders on the sidelines of the UNGA, hoping to end the war in Gaza.

United States President Donald Trump has told the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that the war in Gaza must stop immediately, while calling the recent recognition of Palestinian statehood by several Western countries a “reward” for Hamas.

“We have to stop the war in Gaza immediately,” Trump told world leaders in New York on Tuesday, adding that he has been “deeply engaged” in trying to secure a ceasefire.

Khamenei rules out talks with US over Iran’s nuclear programme.

Iran’s supreme leader say’s it’s ‘not a negotiation but an imposition’ as Tehran negotiates with Europe to avoid sanctions.

Tehran will not directly negotiate with the United States over Iran’s nuclear programme, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei calling talks with the US “a sheer dead end”, as diplomatic parleys are conducted on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The supreme leader’s comments on Iranian state television on Tuesday followed Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi’s meeting with diplomats from Germany, France and the United Kingdom – known as the E3 – as well as European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas over the reimposition of sanctions, set to take place just days from now.

Floods devastate India’s breadbasket of Punjab.

Record monsoon rains devastate Punjab, flooding farms, harming livelihoods, and worsening food shortage risks.

The fields are full, but the paddy is brown and wilted, and the air is thick with the stench of rotting crops and livestock – the aftermath of record monsoon rains that have devastated India’s breadbasket.

In Punjab, often dubbed the country’s granary, the damage is unprecedented, as floods have swallowed farmlands almost the size of London and New York City combined.

Floods and landslides are common during the June–September monsoon season on the subcontinent, but experts say climate change, coupled with poorly planned development, is increasing their frequency, severity, and effect.

Punjab saw rainfall surge by almost two-thirds compared with the average rate for August, according to the national weather department, killing at least 52 people and affecting more than 400,000.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a relief package worth about $180m for Punjab.

The village of Toor, sandwiched between the Ravi river and Pakistan, is in tatters – strewn with collapsing crops, livestock carcasses, and destroyed homes.

“The water came past midnight on 26 August,” said farm worker Surjan Lal. “It rose up to at least 10 feet (three metres) in a matter of minutes.”

Lal said the village in Punjab’s worst-affected Gurdaspur district was marooned for nearly a week.

“We were all on rooftops,” he said. “We could do nothing as the water carried away everything, from our animals and beds.”

In adjacent Lassia, the last Indian village before the frontier, farmer Rakesh Kumar counted his losses.

“In addition to the land I own, I had taken some more on lease this year,” said the 37-year-old. “All my investment has just gone down the drain.”

Spike in teen pregnancies rattles Luwero leaders.

Local leaders in Luwero district are sounding the alarm over a recent spike in teenage pregnancies, warning that the trend threatens the future of the young generation.

According to the latest district health report, at least 4,811 girls below the age of 19 became pregnant in the financial year 2024/25. The report further revealed that 44 of these girls were below the age of 15.

Although the numbers represent a slight decline compared to the 4,875 cases reported in 2023/24, officials say the situation remains alarming. The figures are based on first antenatal care visits registered at health facilities across the district.

The report indicates that teenage pregnancies are most prevalent in Kamira and Zirobwe town councils, as well as the sub-counties of Kamira, Katikamu, and Zirobwe. District probation officer Joyce Namigadde blamed relatives, casual laborers, teachers, and boda-boda riders for luring young girls into reckless s*xual behavior.

Luwero LC V chairperson, Erastus Kibirango, noted that despite the slight drop in the teenage pregnancy rate from 16.1 per cent to 15.5 per cent, the numbers are still dangerously high.

Kibirango attributed the problem to parental neglect, poverty, and the exchange of s*x for money. Grace Wadda, a parent in Luwero town, called for the strict enforcement of laws against child labor, saying that young girls who vend agricultural produce are easily lured into s*xual activities.

Expedito Kiroli, Zirobwe sub-county LC III chairperson, linked the crisis to family breakups resulting from domestic violence, which leaves girls vulnerable to s*xual abuse.

“The girls at risk of teenage pregnancies are those abandoned by their mothers in homes, and the only way to survive is to look for boys to offer them basic needs,” Kiroli said. “

We need to address the societal challenges that are causing family breakups if such cases are to be reduced.”

His counterpart, Pascal Imarach, decried the exposure of young girls to po*******hy, which he said fuels early s*xual activity. Dr Innocent Nkonwa, Luwero district health officer, warned that teenage pregnancies place immense pressure on health facilities, as many young mothers are at high risk of complications. He emphasized that the only sustainable solution is to keep girls in school and delay their involvement in s*xual activity.

Three West African countries to quit International Criminal Court.

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have announced they will immediately withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), labelling it an "instrument of neo-colonialist repression".

The three military-led countries issued a joint statement, saying they would not recognise the authority of the UN-backed court, based in The Hague.

"The ICC has proven itself incapable of handling and prosecuting proven war crimes, crimes against humanity, crimes of genocide, and crimes of aggression," the three leaders said.

The court has not yet responded to the decision by the three countries.

Deadly Haiti drone attack kills eight children in capital Port-au-Prince.

The drone attack in Cite Soleil, one of the capital’s most dangerous neighbourhoods, has been blamed on Haiti’s police.

A deadly drone attack in an impoverished area of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, which killed at least 11 people, including eight children, is being blamed on the government, as the country’s use of the UAVs in its war on gangs comes under increasing scrutiny.

The incident happened on Saturday night in Cite Soleil, one of Port-au-Prince’s most dangerous neighbourhoods, in the city’s west along the coast, as Albert Steevenson, known as Djouma or “King Jouma”, who is a suspected gang leader, was celebrating his birthday.
