Scarcity Hits Tororo Residents as NWSC Halts Water Production over Floods.
By Joseph Omollo.
Several parts of Tororo district have entered day two without piped water after National Water and Sewerage Corporation temporarily shut down its production.
The crisis stems after river Malaba flooded destroying production pumps after a heavy down power that occurred Monday night.
According to National Water and Sewerage Corporation Tororo area manager Eng. George Ongwech, the river flooded and blocked all the pump valves forcing them to temporarily shut down the production as they embark on replacement of the destroyed pumps at the main water production and treatment plant.
He said they opted to halt production after testing the water and found out that the water was unhealthy for human consumption.
"We apologies for the occurrence but this stemmed after we took samples of water to our laboratory and discovered that the water in circulation was unhealthy for human consumption after it had been contaminated by erosion. However we appeal to our customers to be patient as the situation is under correction" he apologized.
He explained that despite being a rainy season where excess water would be expected, they could not allow a situation where water quality is compromised.
He said it's unfortunate that the disaster occurs just few months when the corporation had an overhaul of valve lifting in preparation for the rainy season however he disclosed that the corporation has deployed a static team who are working tirelessly to replace the destroyed valve pumps before they can resume water production.
He attributed the disaster to erroneous ad uncontrollable human activities along the entire River Malaba resulting into soil erosion.
Whereas the situation has left residents weep tears, the crisis has been a blessing in disguise to those who do water vending business.
This newspaper has learnt that a twenty liter Jerrican of water current goes for 2,000 shillings in town.

Secondary schools in Tororo district have been urged to set up patriotism clubs in schools as one of the ways to instill sense of love and responsibility among the learners.
The c was today made by the commissioner in charge of patriotism in state house Sseku Hellen while passing out a total of 4,000 patriots in Tororo district in a ceremony held at Elgon View Primary School playground.

She explained that involving students’ patriotism training offers them an opportunity to learn about self-sacrifice for the country when necessary.
Seku called upon school heads to be patriotic and guide students in understanding the country's resources while fostering national identity.

"With time we are working to engage them and I am sure government is striving towards ensuring that patriotism becomes integral part of our educational curriculum though it challenges our colonial past but we are committed to promoting the concept and educating our young people on the significant harm caused by the colonial academic system “she remarked.
The Assistant Resident district commissioner in charge of Tororo County Mr. Samuel Faljar emphasized the importance of introducing learners to patriotism early noting that doing that helps students to avoid engaging themselves in wrongdoings and encourages them to fight corruption both in schools and in their communities.

He thanked the school heads for fostering patriotism skills among the learners and urged patriots to demonstrate love for their country as they embrace a mindset of responsibility and ownership.
"The essence of patriotism is to instill sense of love and facilitate mindset change" he said.

RDCs accused of misusing government radio airtime
Soroti, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Resident District and City Commissioners (RDCs/RCCs) in Eastern Uganda have been accused of misusing government airtime provided by broadcasters for public education.
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Act of 2013 mandates all radio and television stations to allocate one hour of free airtime weekly to the government for public education on policies, programs, and services. Political content during this airtime is strictly prohibited under UCC guidelines.
However, during a regional broadcasters’ meeting held at Akello Hotel in Soroti City, several radio station managers raised concerns about increasing abuse of this airtime by RDCs.
Justus Akol, Station Manager of Continental FM in Kumi Municipality, narrated a recent confrontation with an RDC who attempted to use the allocated airtime to promote a non-governmental organization’s activities.
Akol revealed that the NGO was even willing to pay for the slot—representing potential income for the station—but the RDC insisted on using the free government airtime instead.
Peterson Hiirya from Teso Broadcasting Service (TBS) in Soroti City added that some RDCs have started using government airtime for political campaigns ahead of the upcoming political season, in clear violation of the guidelines.
He questioned how broadcasters are expected to manage this pressure moving forward.
Responding to the concerns, Daniel Baitwababo, a senior officer in charge of standards at UCC, urged radio station managers to stand their ground and engage RDCs in constructive dialogue to ensure the guidelines are respected. He emphasized that broadcasters must safeguard their platforms from misuse and focus on content that genuinely serves public interest.

No need for 3 prisons in Tororo. Either Mukuju or Kisoko prison should be turned to a mindset change centre for wayward youths- Gonza
Leaders in Tororo have been called upon to be proactive by finding a solution to the increasing rate at which children and unskilled youths are flooding various enterprises and urban areas in Tororo in search of soft life..

According to Gonza Paul, an aspirant for Chairman LCV seat, Tororo District, it is inevitable to follow the example of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), that embarked on an operation to rescued 157 children this week, from the streets of Kampala, which he said is a time bomb.

He said there was a huge risk of this young people resorting to criminal activities in future as times continue to be tougher each passing day.

Kampala’s move to pick street children from downtown Kampala, Wandegeya, Kabalagala, and Kansanga, according to the KCCA spokesperson, Daniel Nuwabine, was a response to the alarming problem of child exploitation, particularly the use of children for begging and trafficking, a situation similar to that of Tororo.

In an exclusive interview with the press in Tororo on Friday afternoon, Gonza Paul questioned why Tororo leadership cannot transform either Mukuju or Kisoko Government prisons into a mindset change center for these young people before they slide to dangerous levels of criminality.
He said it was not necessary for Tororo to have three Government prisons to address criminal issues, pointing out that other parts of the country are doing well without even one prison.
He said, if consulted, he could lend the District leaders a format of how such a move could help reform wayward young people in Tororo and beyond, change their mind set and give them an opportunity to acquire employable skill for their bright future.
