Marcksons Jacob Oboth Oboth, the MP for West Budama Central, has been elected Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament, pledging to lead a Parliament anchored on integrity, fairness, and accountability.
In his acceptance speech, Oboth Oboth expressed gratitude to Members of Parliament for entrusting him with the highest office in the House, describing the moment as a product of “divine grace” and thanking the National Resistance Movement leadership and his constituents in Tororo District for their support.
He assured MPs that he would serve all members equally, including those who did not support his election, emphasizing that the Speaker’s office is a position of service rather than power.
Oboth Oboth pledged to champion a corruption-free Parliament, stressing that accountability must begin within the institution itself as it also holds the Executive and other arms of government to account. He committed to strengthening ethical leadership and restoring public trust in Parliament.
He further promised to promote evidence-based and research-driven debate, warning against hearsay and political grandstanding, and urging legislators to ground decisions and oversight in facts and data.
Calling for unity and reform, the Speaker said Ugandans expect “rapid and visible structural changes” in Parliament. He pledged not to be changed by the influence of office, and urged MPs to serve with humility, dignity, and respect for all citizens.
