Are You Wondering Why Your KTB Bee Hives Are Still Empty and Not Colonized?

There could be several reasons behind this frustrating phenomenon. Here are some possible explanations:
1. Is the hive located in a spot that's not conducive to bee activity, such as an area with high foot traffic or lacking in nearby nectar sources?
2. Was the hive not properly baited with attractive scents and pheromones to lure in a swarm?
3. Does the hive have gaps or poor construction that's making it difficult for the bees to thrive, such as cracks in the wood or not working properly roof?

Why are your KTB Bee Hives not colonised to date?

Step by step on how to prepare, bait, hang, and monitor a KTB bee hive.

1. Start with a Properly Constructed KTB Bee Hive

Before baiting the hive, make sure that it is constructed according to the recommended standards. The hive should have the correct size and shape and should be made from strong, durable, and well-finished wood.

A poorly constructed hive may discourage bees from occupying it. For example, large gaps in the hive may allow rain, wind, ants, or other pests to enter. Rough wood and loose top bars can also make hive management difficult.

Before taking the hive to the apiary, check the following:
• The hive box is strong and stable.
• The wood is dry and of good quality.
• The top bars fit properly.
• There are no unnecessary openings or cracks.
• The hive entrance is properly made and clean.
• The roof or cover protects the hive from direct rain and excessive sunlight.

Remember: Bees prefer a dry, protected, and secure home.

Why are your KTB Bee Hives not colonised to date?

A Kenya Top Bar (KTB) bee hive is one of the most suitable bee hives for smallholder farmers because it is relatively affordable, easy to construct, and simple to manage. However, buying or making a good hive alone does not guarantee that bees will occupy it. The hive must be properly prepared, baited, and placed in a suitable location.

Baiting means preparing the hive with materials or natural scents that attract scout bees. Siting means selecting and preparing the right place where the hive will be installed. When these activities are done correctly, the chances of attracting and retaining a healthy bee colony are greatly improved.

Why Beekeeping is a Strong Livelihood Option

How Many Bee Hives Do You Need to Make a Livelihood in a Family?

In Uganda, the average household has about 4.2 members, with a mix of children, parents, and sometimes grandparents, all relying on each other for support. Around 31% of these households are headed by women, who take on a significant role in managing the family's finances and resources.

While beekeeping has long been seen as a male-dominated activity, women play an important role, especially in value addition—processing honey, making candles, preparing other bee products for sale, and even creating cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. In fact, women's involvement in beekeeping has been shown to increase the overall efficiency and productivity of the beekeeping process.

Uganda’s average household consumption per year is valued at about UGX 6.8 million, which is a significant amount needed to cover food, school fees, healthcare, and other necessities for an average family. This includes expenses like rent, utilities, and transportation, as well as savings for long-term goals like education and retirement.

But here is the good news...with only 10 well-managed, colonized bee hives, a family can cover more than half of its annual consumption needs, which is a significant milestone in achieving financial stability. In fact, with proper training and support, beekeeping can provide a sustainable source of income for many families, especially those in rural areas where job opportunities may be limited.

So, how many bee hives do you need to make a livelihood in a family? The answer is, it's not just about the number of hives, but also about how well they are managed and the value added to the products.
