MTN Uganda has announced a significant 29.7% increase in net profit to Shs 295.7 billion for the half-year ended June 2024, driven by robust growth in voice, data, and fintech services.

The telecom company’s voice revenues rose by 15.1% to Shs 626.7 billion, while data and fintech services saw impressive increases of 28.6% and 23.5%, reaching Shs 373.3 billion and Shs 442.3 billion respectively during the same period.

Overall, MTN Uganda’s service revenue surged by 20.4% to Shs 1.5 trillion, supported by a 14.6% growth in mobile subscriber numbers, which now stands at 20.7 million.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) grew by 22.4% to Shs 784.7 billion. In light of this performance, the company has proposed an interim dividend payout of Shs 6.6 per share, equivalent to Shs 147.8 billion, to be paid on September 20.

“MTN Uganda’s performance in the first half of the year continued on a positive trend, supported by the overall momentum in economic growth,” said MTN Uganda CEO Sylvia Mulinge.

“The Ugandan economy grew by 6.0% for the 2023/24 financial year with macro-economic indicators trending favorably in the six-month period.”

Mulinge highlighted the company’s investment of Shs 219.1 billion to enhance the quality, capacity, and resilience of the MTN network, with a focus on 4G and 5G technologies. The 4G LTE population coverage increased to 87.8%, up 4.4 percentage points, while the 5G rollout extended to 538 strategic sites, achieving full coverage of the capital, Kampala.

“Our 2G and 3G population coverage also rose to 98.9% (+0.5pp) and 93.2% (+0.8pp) respectively as we extended connectivity across the country to ensure that all Ugandans enjoy the benefits of a modern connected life,” she said.

In the fintech space, Mulinge noted that MTN’s investment in the past six months was geared towards advancing the ecosystem with a focus on enhancing appreciation of its advanced services and expanding core services.

“During Q1, we addressed our customers’ credit requirements by establishing a comprehensive loan suite, Wesotinge, in partnership with five financial institutions to meet both short and long-term liquidity needs,” she said. The company also introduced a short-term credit facility, Merchant Xtra Stock, and increased the number of cashpoints for agent top-ups to reduce float gaps, resulting in a 25.2% year-on-year increase in transaction volumes to 2.0 billion.

Left-Right. MTN Uganda Chief Finance Officer, Andrew Bugembe, CEO Sylvia Mulinge and MTN MoMo MD Richard Yego during H1 financial results announcement on August.05, 2024.

Looking ahead, Chief Finance Officer, Andrew Bugembe reaffirmed the company’s medium-term guidance framework of delivering mid-teen service revenue growth, maintaining stable EBITDA margins above 50%, and keeping capital expenditure (excluding leases) intensity at mid-teen levels.

“Leveraging on our network investment, we commit to deliver reliable and affordable voice and data services to empower our loyal customer base,” he said.

“To sustain our commercial momentum in the second half, we will continue to partner, innovate, and provide solutions to meet an ever-evolving market as technology advances.”

Bugembe said investments, particularly in 5G and 4G LTE, should enhance customer experience and sustain the momentum achieved.

Richard Yego, Managing Director of MTN Mobile Money Uganda Ltd, MTN Uganda’s fintech arm, said the company would continue to focus on enhancing liquidity requirements for its merchants and agents as well as solutioning for the customers to encourage cashless transactions

He said the Bank of Uganda’s directive for mandatory verification of customers conducting mobile money transactions above Shs 1 million has not negatively impacted the fintech services.

Uganda’s long-distance stars, Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo, will not compete in the 5000m race at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Uganda Athletics Federation has confirmed.

In a brief statement, Faustino Kiwa, Head Coach of the Uganda Athletics Team, explained that both athletes were left exhausted after the 10,000m race and were unable to recover in time for the 5000m preliminaries scheduled for Wednesday.

“I wish to inform Ugandans that our heroes Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo have been officially withdrawn from the 5,000m race due on Wednesday 7th August 2024. This follows their failure to fully recover from the grueling 10,000m race in which both athletes competed on Friday 2nd August 2024”,reads part of Kiwa’s statement.

Kiwa’s statement continues: “The event left them fatigued with legs and arm muscle pains. Efforts by the Physio Teams to resuscitate the athletes to their full normal form has not been successful. The Coaching staff in consultation with the athletes, taking into consideration the coaching principle “athlete first, winning second”, decided to withdraw them from the 5,000m to give them ample time to fully recover.”

This development is a significant blow for Team Uganda, as many fans had hoped to see the duo secure gold and silver in the 5000m, especially with Cheptegei being the defending champion, having won the race three years ago at the Tokyo Olympics. Now, Oscar Chelimo stands as the sole representative for Uganda in the 5000m race.

All Hopes on Chelimo

With the withdrawal of Cheptegei and Kiplimo, Uganda’s hopes in the 5000m rest on Oscar Chelimo, who is Kiplimo’s cousin. Chelimo arrived at the games village on Sunday, having only prepared for the 5000m, thus avoiding the prolonged stay in Paris’s humid conditions before his race.

This presents a prime opportunity for Chelimo to make a significant impact, potentially replicating his performance at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where he secured a bronze medal despite a challenging field and an injury to Cheptegei during the men’s final.

At the World Athletics Championships, both Chelimo and Cheptegei had qualified for the final, with expectations high for Cheptegei to clinch a second world title after winning the 10,000m race a week prior. However, Chelimo emerged as a strong contender after Cheptegei struggled.

During that race, Cheptegei led for the first four laps before being overtaken by Kenya’s Jacob Krop and Daniel Simiu. As Cheptegei faded, he signaled to Chelimo, who was among the last for almost nine laps. Chelimo then surged past eleven athletes in the final 400 meters to secure his medal. Later it was revealed that Cheptegei was running with a tendon injury.

Worth noting

Chelimo’s breakthrough was in 2018 when he won 3000m bronze at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina, however during the last edition of the world championships in Doha 2019, Chelimo did not progress to the finals 5000m after finishing 14th in heat one of the race.

During the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Chelimo finished last (16) in the final of the 5000m race that was won by his compatriot Joshua Cheptegei, but previously he had finished 4th in heat one of the semifinal to qualify for the final.

Nanyondo struggles

Meanwhile, middle-distance runner Winnie Nanyondo has failed to qualify automatically for the women’s 1500-meter semi-finals after finishing 10th in heat three on Tuesday morning.

Despite a promising start, Nanyondo fell behind, to finish 10th in a time of 4 minutes and 07.06 seconds behind Kenya’s Nelly Chepchirchir who won the heat in 2 minutes and 02. 67 seconds. Having finished outside the top 6, she drops to Repechage for another chance to make the semifinals.

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has  denied allegations that Parliament is misusing taxpayers' money to fund luxurious clothing for the Speaker and himself.

In response to concerns raised by Denis Oguzu, MP for Maracha County, Tayebwa clarified that the only items funded by the public are the traditional wigs and coats worn during plenary sittings.

"The only items we wear that are funded by the public are the wigs and coats we wear while presiding over plenary sittings. That's it, "Tayebwa said.

Oguzu had sought clarification on reports suggesting that the offices of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker have a budget line for clothing and beddings, which he believed cast Parliament in a bad light.

Tayebwa's response aimed to set the record straight and reassure the public that Parliament is transparent and accountable in its expenditure.

"We are not using taxpayers' money to buy luxurious suits and dresses," he reiterated.

This clarification comes as a relief to those concerned about parliamentary expenditure, and highlights the importance of accurate information in maintaining public trust.

Uganda on Friday announced the detection of two cases of mpox imported from the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in the western district of Kasese.

The cases were among six suspected infections in Mpondwe and Bwera, towns bordering the DRC, according to Henry Mwebesa, director general of health services at Uganda's Ministry of Health, in a statement issued in Kampala, the capital of Uganda.

He said samples from a 37-year-old Ugandan woman married to a Congolese national and a 22-year-old Congolese female tested positive for the viral disease. "Findings reveal that transmission did not take place in Uganda and to date, no secondary transmission has been linked to the two cases," said Mwebesa.

"So far, nine contacts are under follow-up. Uganda continues to monitor the evolving situation in the DRC where cases have been reported in nearly all provinces, the latest being North Kivu, specifically Goma," he said while confirming the deployment of a rapid response team to Kasese to collaborate with district authorities in controlling the imported cases.

The East African Community (EAC), a regional bloc, issued an alert Monday, urging its eight member states to educate citizens on protecting themselves and preventing the spread of mpox. This followed reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) warning of mpox outbreaks in Burundi and the DRC, both EAC members.

Meanwhile, Kenya's Ministry of Health declared a case of mpox Wednesday following its detection in Taita Taveta, southeast of the country's capital of Nairobi.

Mpox, also known as monkeypox, transmits through close contact with infected animals or humans, contaminated objects, and respiratory droplets, causes symptoms including skin rash, fever, intense headache, muscle aches, back pain, weakness, and swollen lymph nodes, as per WHO guidelines.

Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei withstood surging Ethiopian team tactics to claim gold in the men’s Olympic 10,000-metre at the Stade de France.

The three-time world champion timed an Olympic record of 26 minutes and 43.14 seconds for victory on Friday.

Ethiopia’s Berihu Aregawi edged American Grant Fisher by two-hundredths of a second to take silver in 26:43.44.

The world record holder added the Olympic 10,000 metres title to his remarkable haul to take the Games’ first track gold.

The Ugandan, who took silver in Tokyo and gold over 5,000 metres, produced a devastating last 600 metres and his finishing time took 18 seconds off Kenenisa Bekele’s 2008 Olympic record.

Aregawi, who had been part of a three-pronged Ethiopian front-running group almost from the start, finished strongly.

A pack of 13 athletes ran the last two-thirds of the race together and, remarkably, all of them finished in under 27 minutes.

The first surge came after just two laps of the 25-lap race, defending champion Selemon Barega and Ethiopian teammate Yomif Kejelcha accelerating away to split the field.

The 25-strong field dissipated but all runners held on.

Aregawi had his turn after Kejelcha as the Ethiopian trio dictated the pace in front of a noisy near-capacity 69,000 crowd at the Stade de France in perfect warm conditions.

Gabonese Transitional President, Gen Brice Oligui Nguema is expected to arrive in the country on Friday for a three-day official visit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said.

According to a brief statement from the ministry, Nguema will be in the country from Thursday to Saturday.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would wish to inform the General Public that the Transitional President of the Republic of Gabon will be in Uganda on official Visit from 1st-3rd August 2024," the ministry stated.

This will be his first state visit to Uganda since he assumed office as the Interim President of Gabon.

Nguema, 49, has been serving as the Interim President of Gabon, chairman of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions of Gabon since September last year.

He took power following the 2023 Gabonese coup d'état which overthrew President Ali Bongo, who had ruled the country from 2009 to 2023.

Following the coup, he was declared the interim president of Gabon in an announcement broadcast on state television.

At his swearing-in ceremony in the country's capital, Libreville, Nguema, said the coup had been peaceful and vowed to return power to the people by organising free, transparent and credible elections.

“With the new government, made up of experienced people, we’re going to give everyone a chance to hope,” he was quoted as saying.

Singer Edrisa Musuuza alias Kenzo has admitted that he is no longer friends with musician-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine.

Speaking to journalists recently, Kenzo said their relationship ended because they no longer shared the same views on some issues, especially politics.

“My relationship with Bobi Wine ended because he doesn’t need me. If he needed me, he would have done what is needed to be done and he knows that. There are many out there who would have loved to be behind his back if he needed them," Kenzo said.

He added, "Whoever wants to hate me because I don't support Bobi Wine should move on because he and I are not on good terms anymore, that's for sure. I have no problem with him, I wish him well but nobody should intimidate me."

The two friends-turned-enemies share a long history together with Kenzo having previously admitted that he was inspired by Bobi in his musical career.

However, their relationship soured when Kyagulanyi joined politics and challenged President Museveni's rule.

Their feud gained moment in 2019, when Kenzo declared after meeting with Museveni that he would never campaign for Kyagulanyi ahead of 2021 presidential elections.

“Mr. Kyagulanyi is my friend but I will never campaign for him again. I will support him and vote for him but won’t campaign for him. I will never jump onto any platform to convince people for him unless he has himself convinced people of what he is capable of doing,”Kenzo said in 2019.

Since then, the two have not been getting along and have instead been engaged in a war of words.
