Greece bans take-away in Attica, Thessaloniki, Halkidiki over weekends
Without any previous warning, Development Minister Adonis Georgiadis, announced on Saturday morning that the take-away service is forbidden in the regional units of Athens, Thessaloniki and Halkidiki over the weekends. Apart from being another tripping up for the food sector, the ban came out of the blue, was not included in the set of stricter lockdown measures announced on Friday evening and was “imposed” without previous information to the sector. Coffee shop owners were not aware and were selling take-away ever since Saturday morning.

Minister Georgiadis claimed live on Skai TV that “the take-away had been banned.”

“Delivery operates as usual but the take-away has been banned over the weekends as crowding has been observed in front of stores where people get their food. therefore the take-away stops in Athens and Thessaloniki over the weekends but delivery at home continues as usually,” Georgiadis said.
In another TV channel, Georgiadis’ deputy Nikos Papathanasis said the take-away will be possible only Monday to Friday.

The announcements triggered among the onwers and employees of coffee shops who were not informed about the ban and had opened the facilities selling take-away coffee to customers who would be found “violating the rule ” they were not aware of.

Both owners and customers would be fined with thousands euros the first and 300 euros the latter because a minister woke up

Of course, the sudden and deliberate decision while the take-away service was ongoing, had nothing to do with food, but with the coffee and the snack people buy and go for a walk or sit on a square bench as cafes have been shut down since November 7, 2020.

It should be noted that Head of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias who announced the stricter measure on Friday, said that “people can still make their supplies from coffee shops.”

Short time later, the Development Ministry issued a press release saying that the coffee take-away ban is in force from Sunday, Feb 7 and the following weekend Feb 13-14, as the stricter weekend lockdown is currently imposed until Feb 15, 2021.

The ban affects also businesses that their main activity is not coffee, such as bakeries, candy shops etc.

The ministry clarifications and postponing the ban to as of Sunday was necessary as measures can only go in effect after they have been published in the official gazette.

And while a handful of people are not allowed to queue outside a coffee shop on Saturday and Sunday, but they can do so Monday to Friday, the Prime Minister nicely crowded with vulnerable groups (elderly) on the remote island of Fournoi. Kyriakos Mitsotakis is visiting Fournoi and neighboring Ikaria over the weekend in order to check the progress of the vaccination program.

PS In a country, where the government is getting more and more authoritarian, any minister believes he can pop-up in the middle of the day and forbid ongoing activities.

They hate the people they were elected to serve and are getting out of control here, I’m afraid.

Attica, Thessaloniki, Halkidiki: Curfew 6pm-5am Sat/Sun, retail operation Mon-Fri
Greece’s epidemiologists and government officials worked out a very complicated set of additional restrictions for the residents of Athens, the regional units of Attica, Thessaloniki and Halkidiki to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Restrictions will be tighter on the weekend while the churches still remain open, and economic activity of retail shops and services will be allowed only from Monday to Friday.

According to Head of Civil Protection and Deputy Minister Nikos Hardalias, the measures for Attica, Thessaloniki and Halkidiki that go into force at 6:00 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2021, are:
Curfew: 6 p.m. – 5 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday and 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. Monday to Friday.

Only essential shops such a supermarkets, food stores, bakeries, fuel stations and pharmacies are open on Saturday. Operation time 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Open markets (laiki) is closed on Saturday but this measure go into force on Feb 13.

Retail stores, hairdressers, nails, beauty salons, diet services KTEO are open Monday to Friday and with the rules and the measures already in force. Operation time: 07:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Movement on Saturday and Sunday only with sms and for the 6 known reasons and only until 6:00 p.m. Exceptions are for health reasons, workers and dog walking close to home.

These measures are valid from 6:00 a.m. Saturday, 6. February until Monday, 15. February 2021.

These three regional units and well as the five areas of “high epidemiological danger” – that is Patras, Halkida, Mykonos, Santorini and Agios Nikolaos (Crete) – remain in regime of daily surveillance. epidemiological data will be evaluated on daily basis.

Health experts said on Friday evening that there are 4,400 active cases in Attica.

For fourth consecutive day, daily coronavirus infections in Greece are above 1,000 even if there is a general lockdown since November 7, 2020, and several regions and municipalities are in tougher lockdown regime since at least a week.

The measures are the result of an obvious compromise between epidemiologists and government officials with the latter to not want the halting of business activities.

Tougher lockdown for Athens, Attica, several islands and municipalities.
Head of Civil Protection and deputy Minister Nikos Hardalias announced on Friday evening tougher lockdown measures for the regional unit of Attica and Athens as well as for several municipalities including two Cyclades islands due to increased epidemiological load.

At the same time, he urged residents of two regional units in Peloponnese one Ionian island and Crete to comply with the protection measures, warning they could be next to be placed in tougher lockdown.

In tougher lockdown areas, marked as “red” the curfew extends from 6:00 p.m. to 5:00 .am. with exception of Attica that maintains the nationwide curfew 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The tougher lockdown comes as new cases surged to 941 on Friday with the majority of them in Attica.

Regional units and municipalities in tougher lockdown as of 06:00 a.m. Saturday, January 30, 2021 until February 8:

Regional units

Attica except the region of islands in Saronic Gulf 2597 active cases
Lesvos 66 and increasing in last days
Mykonos 22
Municipalities

Eordaia (Kozani) – 66 active cases
Thiva & Tanagra (Viotia) 45 & 31
Sparti (Lakonia) 69
Halkida 157 & Roma settlement in Dystion (Evia)
Nea Propontida (Halkidiki) 30
Patras (Achaia) 170 – cases doubled in last 20 days
Thira (Thira/Santorini) 23
– The epidemiological picture of the Municipality of Acharnes (Attica/Athens), which has been in the regime of additional restrictive measures since January 15, causes special concern. Instead of a decrease, there is an increase in active cases, which from 171 on January 15 have reached 188.

Measures in “red areas” in addition to those as in the nationwide lockdown in low risk areas that remains in force:

Curfew 06:00 p.m. – 05:00 a.m. – Exception Attica 09:00 p.m. -05:00 a.m. due to high population number and public transport network.

Only Gymnasiums will operate (from February 1), Lyceums with distance learning

Up to 9 people are allowed in places of worship during religious services.

Stores operation only with click away system. Clothing and Footwear stores with click in shop system.

Hairdressers, barbers, nails salons and bookstores only with appointment.

Nikos Hardalias called on residents of the Municipalities of Volos and Riga Fereou ans well as those in the Regional Units of Zakynthos, Corinth and Ilia to observe the lockdown restrictions and protection measures “as there has been increased epidemiological load in recent days.”

He also called for increased vigilance residents on the island of Crete “due to detection of mutated strains of the virus in the area.”
In “yellow” regions, that is low risk areas (not red!) the same lockdown restrictions and protection measures as until today, Jan 29, remain in force.

There, Gymnasiums and Lyceums will open again on Monday, February 1, 2021, as well as OPAP gambling shops.
