The Aberdeen Area Veterans group recently launched a $3 million capital campaign to purchase and renovate the Milwaukee Depot into a new veteran center. The new facility would house offices, meeting rooms, and family support services for local and regional veterans. This plan replaces earlier ones for a new building on North Roosevelt, with the group hoping to raise $1 million by the end of the year.

Last Saturday, Northern State football defeated Wayne State 26-7 in their home opener!! The team dominated during the second half after a slow offensive start, with quarterback Brock Bagozzi leading the Wolves, scoring three touchdowns, one rushing, and two passing seal the win. Their defense had 15 tackles and a key interception, holding Wayne State to just one score.

Avera St. Luke’s Hospital has opened their new 18-bed behavioral health unit on its fourth floor, replacing the old space on the second floor. The upgrade will allow care for both adults and adolescents, and includes a gym and therapy areas. The former behavioral health unit will now be used for residential addiction treatment.

Major fish kills have occurred at Richmond Lake due to extreme low oxygen levels. Deeper water levels have been hit the hardest due to multiple factors. The lack of rain in the watershed and a dam replacement project has been the cause of it. Despite this, the lake is still safe to swim, fish, and boat!!

Dacotah Prairie Museum is expected to get two new exhibit areas by the end of this year!! One plans to focus on the history of towns in Brown County. While the other, called Buntrock Gallery, will showcase animals such as the buffalo. These renovations were funded by a donation from Columbia native, Dean Buntrock.

Whistler Carol Skinner will be inducted into the Dakota Musicians Association Hall of Fame on September 12!!
