Local Dam That Failed Along With 7 Others Here Have Questionable Issues

The Longleaf Golf Course Dam failure flooded three homes, and nearly claimed the lives of a Moore County family, during Tropical Storm Chantal.

STRUCTURE FIRE AND OUTSIDE FIRE WEDNESDAY EVENING OUTSIDE WEST END

Emergency responders were dispatched to a fire call just after 6:30 pm Wednesday off of NC Highway 73 near Mckenzies Mill Road outside of West End.

Fire units reported heavy smoke visible as they turned off of 211 onto NC 73 and requested a full alarm to respond.

The West End Fire Chief was the first to reach the scene. He reported a working structure fire at a landscaping business located here, as well as a brush fire at this location.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in less than 30 minutes, however remained on location mopping up.

Responding included units with West End Fire & Rescue, Seven Lakes Fire Rescue, Eagle Springs Fire Department, Pinehurst Fire Department, Eastwood Fire Department, NC Forest Service, Moore County EMS, Moore County Fire Marshals Office, and the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.

HOKE SO CHARGES MAN FOR INDECENT LIBERTIES WITH A CHILD

The Hoke County Sheriff’s Office announced on Friday, July 18, 2025, at approximately 9:57 p.m., Hoke County Deputies and Detectives responded to the 100 block of Cook Road, in reference to a refusal to leave.

After contacting the 911 caller at the residence, Detectives learned that a juvenile was touched inappropriately by Dennis Locklear Sr.

Dennis Locklear Sr, was taken into custody without incident, he was charged with one count indecent liberties with a child and was transported to the Hoke County Detention Center, where he received a $7,500.00 secured bond.

SINGLE VEHICLE ROLLOVER OUTSIDE ABERDEEN MONDAY EVENING

Emergency units were dispatched around 7:15 p.m. Monday evening to a motor vehicle accident on NC Highway 211 east of Aberdeen at the intersection of Misty Creek Drive.

The first arriving fire unit reported a single vehicle accident with heavy damage to the vehicle.

Accotding to fire officials, the vehicle had rolled over and hit a power pole at the corner of Misty Creek Drive and NC Highway 211.

An adult and a small child were reportedly the only occupants of the vehicle. Both were evaluated at the scene by EMS, however did not require transport to the hospital.

Misty Creek Drive was temporarily closed to traffic in both directions at the intersection of NC Highway 211.

Responding today were units with Aberdeen Fire and Rescue, Moore County EMS and Aberdeen Police Department.

The cause of the accident remained under investigation as of this report.

SCAM ALERT: Sheriff's Office Will Never Demand Payment to Avoid Arrest

Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields would like to remind all citizens that the Moore County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER contact anyone to demand money in lieu of an arrest.

In recent days, the Sheriff's Office has received numerous reports of a phone scam in which callers falsely claim that the recipient has missed jury duty and must pay a fine to avoid being arrested.

To make the scam appear more legitimate, the callers are even using the names of actual employees of the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.

These scammers often request payment through cash cards or gift cards, a method that is never used by any legitimate local, state, or federal government agency. Beware that the scammers will not want you to hang up, which is a signal that you are being scammed.

Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and to never provide personal or financial information over the phone to unknown callers.

If you receive such a call and want to verify that it is a scam, you can always call the Moore County Sheriff's Office directly at 910-947-2931.

NC 690 BLOCKED BY TRACTOR-TRAILER OUTSIDE VASS MONDAY MORNING

Emergency responders were dispatched to NC 690 near Johnson Grove Road Monday morning just after 8:30 a.m. for a tractor trailer that was in the road blocking one lane of traffic.

According to officials the vehicle has broken down and is blocking traffic. The fire commander at the scene requested North Carolina DOT respond reference an extended road closure here today due to this vehicle in the roadway.

Responding this morning were units with the Cypress Point Fire & Rescue and the Moore County Sheriff's Office.
