Uwharrie National Forest Conducting 400 Acre Controlled Burn Today

The Uwharrie National Forest will conduct prescribed fire operations Friday, December 12th, on 401 acres southwest of Troy, North Carolina, pending all required approvals.

This work will continue throughout the day as weather conditions allow. Prescribed fires help reduce overgrown vegetation to help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires.

Roads and trails near the planned prescribed burning include:
• Forest Service Roads 517 and 6681
• Supertree Loop Trail
• Dutchman’s Creek Trail
• Woodrun Trail

Those areas may remain closed to the public for several days for public safety. Watch for warning signs along roads near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns.

Residents may experience smoke during the prescribed burns. When driving, slow down and turn on your headlights when you encounter smoke on the road.

USDA Forest Service fire experts will evaluate weather conditions in the hours before a burn begins. If conditions warrant, scheduled prescribed fire activities may be canceled.

Stay informed about the scheduled prescribed fires through the forest website, social media channels, and InciWeb, the interagency incident information system. The Forest Service will notify county emergency management officials when burning begins.

VASS MAN ARRESTED FOR SHOOTING AT VEHICLE IN CHATHAM COUNTY

A Moore County man has been charged after allegedly firing at a driver and his daughter along N.C. 42 near Buckhorn Road in Chatham County.

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that John Steven Ryals, 31, of Vass, was arrested Wednesday in connection with the November 22nd incident.

Ryals faces two misdemeanor counts of assault by pointing a gun and one count of going armed to the terror of people, according to court records.

Investigators said the driver reported that Ryals passed him in a no‑passing zone before firing shots at him and his daughter. Ryals was not present when deputies initially spoke with the driver.

Deputies later identified Ryals through his vehicle description and license plate, which matched a white Chevrolet Avalanche registered in his name. Authorities said they further tied him to the vehicle using social media, DMV records, and phone data.

A search warrant allowed deputies to access Ryals’ cellular GPS records, which confirmed he was in the area at the time of the shooting, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Ryals is currently being held without bail at the Lee County Jail, awaiting a District Court judge’s decision on bond.
