American News: Since 1885

Welcome to The American News on Facebook - a hub for conversation about news and ideas on the local stories . Like our page and connect with our journalists and readers.

In 1885 a weekly newspaper is established in Aberdeen called The Aberdeen Weekly News. The following year, The Aberdeen Daily News is formed and publishes daily. In 1904, The American, a “newspaper with new ideas” forms and in 1920 it purchases The Aberdeen Daily News but both publications operate independently until 1923 when the two combine to form the American News.

In 1928 the newspaper is sold to the Ridder Family & J.A. Mathews - but in 1933 Mathews passes away and the Ridder family assumes control of the newspaper. In 1951, the American News builds a new ‘home base’ at 124 S. 2nd Street - a few years later in 1962 the first addition is added to the building for expansion.

In 1966, the weekly ‘Green Sheets’ is established and the Farm Forum is born.
