Congratulations to KACU's Baylie Simon and Josiah Wonnell for winning national awards at 2025 Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards!

Baylie received an award in Audio Radio News Reporting for "Maternity desert."

Josiah received an award in Radio Sports Reporting for "Small college athletes figure out new reality of NIL."

The SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards recognize outstanding collegiate journalism from across the country, with national winners advancing from 12 regional competitions. Baylie and Josiah were previously awarded at the regional level this spring.

We are proud of Baylie and Josiah for representing KACU and ACU through excellent reporting and storytelling.

"Hello! My name is Leslie Carrigan. I am a Junior journalism major from Midland. I’ve been working at ACU since my freshman year as a reporter and I spend one semester hosting. During my time at ACU I have gotten to cover anything from the city council, to elections to local events. Recently I got to cover a feature on the Party Line booth by Seven and One Books. Outside the newsroom I love reading, embroidery and hanging out with friends. I love working at KACU and I’m so grateful for the experience and training it’s given me."

From Olathe, Kansas to Abilene, one of KACU’s newest voices is already making an impact.

Josiah Wonnell is a first-year Journalism and Sports Media major at ACU. He's been named KACU Rookie Reporter and Host and is currently producing “Minds On Trial,” his semester-long series.

He loves storytelling that matters, and says Abilene, his mentors, and ACU have already shaped him in powerful ways.

Whether he’s covering a story or spending time with others, his goal is simple: do meaningful work that reflects his faith and connects people.

Students like him are the heart of KACU.
