“This recognition means so much to our community in St. Tammany. We muLago Fest Northshoreoices are heard in local government and care for the new generations of children with Hispanic roots who are born in the U.S. As citizens and residents of this country, they deserve to be embraced with love, dignity, and respect — that’s what we stand for!” Dayhanna Velandia
September 15 marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the traditions, music, art, and cultural contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans across the country.
President Cooper recognized Hola Northshore La with a proclamation declaring the month in St. Tammany Parish. Hola Northshore’s mission is to bring together and celebrate the shared stories, culture and experiences of the Hispanic community in St. Tammany Parish.
National Hispanic Heritage Month, known as “Mes de Herencia Hispana”, is celebrated nationwide from September 15 through October 15 each year. What began in 1968 as Hispanic Week under President Lyndon B. Johnson was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period. September 15 is significant as the anniversary of independence for the Latin American countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Additionally, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18 respectively.
Hispanic Heritage Month is an incredible opportunity to acknowledge the crucial role that Latinos play in shaping the fabric of our parish and country. All residents are invited to join in celebrating the vibrant heritage and contributions of Hispanic and Latino people in St. Tammany Parish.
