“Who else got this lead?”
That’s a question every home-service business owner should ask when paying for leads.

Because with many lead-generation platforms, the homeowner asking for help may also be connected with multiple contractors.

Before you even pick up the phone, you could already be competing on response time, price, and who can get the customer’s attention first.

But what if the homeowner saw **your business**, responded to **your message**, and started a conversation directly with **you**?

That’s what I call the **Direct Lead Advantage**.

Here’s how it works:

**1. Get homeowners to respond to YOUR business.**

Put your own message in front of local homeowners. Talk about a specific problem they have, show your work, and give them a reason to recognize your company.

When they reach out, they’re responding specifically to you.

**2. Make the conversation direct.**

Give them an easy way to message you.

Send a photo.
Ask for an estimate.
Message a ZIP code.
Check availability.

Instead of calling someone who may be wondering, *“Wait…which company are you again?”* they saw your message and chose to respond.

**3. Own the relationship.**

Respond quickly. Find out what they need, where they’re located, and what their timeline looks like. Then move the conversation toward an estimate.

Even if they don’t hire today, you’ve started a relationship with someone who specifically interacted with your business.

That can become follow-up, future work, reviews, and eventually referrals.

Does every message become a job?

Of course not.

But there’s a big difference between chasing a lead that may have been sent to several competitors and having a homeowner choose to message **your company directly**.

The goal isn’t just more leads.

It’s building a system where homeowners see **you**, respond to **you**, and start the conversation with **your business**.

And if you’re thinking, *“I’d do more of this, but I don’t know what to post or what to say,”* I created a free **Social Media Answer Guide** customized to your home-service industry.

It gives you specific questions, topics, and content ideas you can start using to create those conversations.

Are the leads you’re paying for actually yours?

That’s a question every home-service business owner should be asking.

Because with many lead-generation platforms, the same homeowner may be connected with multiple contractors.

So before you even make the call, you may already be competing on speed, price, and who can get the customer’s attention first.

That’s a completely different situation than someone seeing your business, responding to your message, and starting a conversation directly with you.

That’s what I call the Direct Lead Advantage.

Here’s how it works:

1. Get the homeowner to respond to your business.

Instead of relying only on third-party lead platforms, put your own message in front of homeowners in your service area.

Talk about the exact problem you solve.

Show your work.

Give them a reason to recognize and remember your company.

2. Make the conversation direct.

Give them a simple way to message you.

Send a photo.

Ask for an estimate.

Message a ZIP code.

Check availability.

The easier it is to start the conversation, the more likely the right homeowner is to take that next step.

3. Own the relationship after the lead comes in.

Respond quickly.

Ask good questions.

Find out what they need, where they’re located, and what their timeline looks like.

Then move them toward an estimate.

And even if they are not ready to hire today, you now have a real conversation with someone who specifically interacted with your business.

That can turn into follow-up.

Future work.

A review.

A referral.

And more awareness for your company.

That’s why I like this model.

You are not just buying access to a name on a spreadsheet.

You are creating conversations around your own business.

Now, not every message will turn into a job.

But there is a big difference between chasing a lead that may have been sent to several competitors and having a homeowner choose to message your company directly.

The goal is not just more leads.

It is to build a system where the homeowner sees you, responds to you, and starts the conversation with your business.

And if one of the things holding you back is not knowing what to post, what to say, or what kind of content would actually get homeowners interested, I also put together a FREE Social Media Answer Guide customized to your specific home-service industry.

WHY MY CLIENT INCREASED THEIR META AD SPEND—AND REDUCED SPEND WITH YELP AND GOOGLE

Recently, one of my home-service clients reviewed the performance of several marketing channels.

Here’s what the numbers showed:

Facebook and Instagram
$600 spent
$4,175 tracked revenue
6.96x ROAS

Google Ads
$300 spent
$3,930 tracked revenue
13.10x ROAS

Yelp
$700 spent
$2,645 tracked revenue
3.78x ROAS

Thumbtack
$1,700 spent
$4,875 tracked revenue
2.87x ROAS

Repeat and referrals
$0 direct ad spend
$5,875 tracked revenue

Altogether, the business generated $21,500 in tracked revenue from $3,300 in marketing spend.

That’s a blended return of 6.52x.

But the most important part of this story isn’t that Facebook generated leads.

It isn’t even the 6.96x return.

It’s what the client decided to do after reviewing the numbers.

They reduced spending with Yelp and Google, then increased their Facebook and Instagram budget with me by another $300.

That decision tells you more than a screenshot of leads ever could.

It means the campaign created enough confidence to earn a larger share of the budget.

That’s how marketing should be evaluated.

Not just by clicks.
Not by likes.
Not even by lead volume alone.

A channel should be judged by the quality of the opportunities it creates, the revenue connected to those opportunities, the cost of producing them, and whether the business believes the process can scale.

This can be especially valuable for businesses like power washing, junk hauling, lawn care, house cleaning, gutter cleaning, mobile detailing, handyman services, and smaller painting projects.

These businesses need a steady flow of local homeowners starting conversations.

The next step can be simple:

Send a photo.
Share a ZIP code.
Check availability.
Request an estimate.

The homeowner sees the message.

They reach out.

The business qualifies the project.

Then the conversation moves toward an estimate and a booked job.

Meta doesn’t automatically replace every other channel. Google produced a higher tracked return during this period.

But marketing decisions aren’t made from one number alone. Lead quality, consistency, scalability, competition, follow-up control, and room for growth all matter.

It still just makes me SO friggin excited when a client says 'Yes, let's keep working together and let's also increase ad spend...because this is working'.

Referrals are like gold.

When one comes in, it can be incredibly valuable.

The trust is already there.
The homeowner may already know your reputation.
And one strong referral can quickly turn into a great project, another introduction, and real momentum for your business.

But gold is rare.

You cannot wake up on Tuesday, decide you need three more jobs by Friday, and know exactly where to dig.

Referrals work the same way.

They are valuable, but they are not predictable enough to build your entire schedule around.

That is where many good home-service businesses get stuck.

They do excellent work.

Their customers are happy.

People recommend them.

But one week the phone will not stop ringing, and the next week everything slows down.

The crew still needs work.

Payroll still has to be covered.

Equipment, insurance, vehicles, and materials still cost money.

But the business is waiting for someone else to remember its name and make an introduction.

That is the Referral Gold Trap.

The solution is not to stop valuing referrals.

It is to build a system that creates more opportunities while also helping generate more referrals in the future.

Here is the Referral Growth Loop:

First, protect the referrals you already earn.

Keep doing quality work.

Communicate clearly.

Show up when you say you will.

Make the customer experience easy.

Then ask for reviews and referrals when the customer is happiest with the result.

Second, create new local conversations consistently.

Promote one clear service to homeowners in your area.

Speak directly to a problem they already have.

Give them an easy reason to send a message, share a photo, or request an estimate.

The goal is not to replace referrals.

The goal is to stop relying on chance as your only growth strategy.

Third, turn today’s leads into tomorrow’s referrals.

Every new lead that becomes a happy customer can create:

Another review.

Another before-and-after story.

Another person who knows your name.

And another potential source of referrals.

A lead system does not compete with word of mouth.

It feeds it.

Referrals are the result of great work you have already completed.

A dependable lead system helps create the next opportunity.

When you combine both, you get more control over your schedule while continuing to grow the reputation that makes referrals so valuable.

Referrals are still gold.

Your business just should not have to survive by waiting for the next lucky strike.

If I sent you messages from local homeowners who need the exact service you provide, could you turn those conversations into estimates and booked jobs?

Because if the answer is yes, but your schedule still depends on referrals, Facebook groups, and hoping the phone rings, this is for you.

Most home-service businesses do not struggle because they are bad at the work.

You may already have the experience.

You may have a solid crew.

You may have great reviews, strong before-and-after photos, and customers who are happy with the finished result.

The problem is that the right local homeowner does not always know when to contact you.

And if your phone only rings when someone remembers your name, sees a yard sign, or gets referred by a friend, then you do not really have a dependable lead system.

You have hope.

And hope is hard to build a schedule around.

So what do most business owners do?

They boost a post.

They list every service they provide.

They post a completed job with the caption, “Another happy customer.”

Or they run an ad that says, “Quality service at an affordable price.”

Then they wait.

But people do not message a business just because the business exists.

They message when three things happen:

They recognize a problem.

They believe you can help solve it.

And they are given a clear, easy next step.

That is the idea behind the Local Message Engine.

Step 1: Promote one service

Do not try to advertise everything at once.

Choose one service based on demand, profitability, job value, capacity, and seasonality.

Maybe you want more deck repairs.

Maybe you want more junk-removal jobs.

Maybe you want roofing, pressure washing, landscaping, painting, or remodeling projects.

Whatever it is, give the homeowner one clear reason to pay attention.

When you promote everything, the message becomes vague.

When you promote one service, the right homeowner can immediately tell whether the message is for them.

Step 2: Lead with the homeowner’s problem

Do not start with your company history.

Start with what the homeowner is already seeing, feeling, or worrying about.

For example:

“Is your deck starting to feel soft or unstable?”

“Do you need that pile of junk gone before the weekend?”

“Are you seeing water stains and wondering whether your roof is leaking?”

“Is your yard becoming harder to maintain every season?”

That kind of message helps the right person stop and think:

“That is exactly what I need help with.”

You are not trying to get everyone’s attention.

You are trying to get the attention of the local homeowner who has the problem you solve.

Step 3: Give them one easy reason to message

Do not make the next step complicated.

Ask them to send a photo.

Ask them to message their ZIP code.

Ask them to check availability.

Ask them to request an estimate.

You could say:

“Send us a picture of the project and we’ll help you figure out the best next step.”

That is much easier than asking someone to research your company, study your website, compare every service, and decide what to do next.

Once the message comes in, the opportunity is yours to move forward.

Respond quickly.

Ask a few simple questions.

Find out where they are located, what service they need, what the project looks like, and what their timeline is.

Then move the conversation toward one clear action.

That may be scheduling an estimate.

It may be requesting more photos.

It may be arranging a consultation.

The important thing is that the conversation keeps moving.

This works because it removes confusion.

One service.

One homeowner problem.

One simple next step.

The goal is not more likes.

It is not vague awareness.

It is not a report full of impressions that never turns into revenue.

The goal is more local conversations with people who may need the exact service you provide.

I also created a free Local Message Campaign Checklist that walks through the four pieces you need before launching:

Your priority service.

Your homeowner problem.

Your message prompt.

And your follow-up process.

It is designed to help you avoid launching a vague ad and hoping it works.

Instead, you can build a campaign around the service you actually want to grow and create a clearer path from someone seeing your message to contacting your business.

If I sent you messages from local homeowners who need the EXACT service you provide, could you turn those conversations into estimates and booked jobs?

If the answer is yes, but your schedule still depends on referrals, Facebook groups, and hoping the phone rings, this is for you.

The problem usually is not that you are bad at the work.

It is that the right homeowner does not know when to contact you.

A strong local lead campaign does three things:

It promotes one clear service.

It speaks directly to the homeowner’s current problem.

And it gives them one easy reason to message you.

Not more vague awareness.

Not more random likes.

Real local conversations with people who may need the work you actually want to sell.

That is the idea behind the Local Message Engine.

One service.

One problem.

One simple next step.

I also put together a free Local Message Campaign Checklist that covers the offer, message, targeting, and follow-up pieces that should be in place before you spend money on ads.
