#OnThisDay in 2010, the Oklahoma State Senate Historical Preservation Fund unveiled this portrait of Mary Francis “Te Ata” Thompson Fisher at the Oklahoma State Capitol.

The portrait, created by Nellie Ellen Shepherd in 1920, was dedicated to the memory of former Oklahoma State Senator, the late Helen Cole. Helen Cole was a relative of Te Ata and her son, Congressman Tom Cole, as well as Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby, spoke at the portrait dedication.

Some of our favorite memories of 2019 come from events we attended in communities throughout Oklahoma and the U.S.

In May, we set up shop at Norman Native American Frontier Days. In July, we celebrated #NationalDayOfTheCowboy at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center. August kept us close to home for the Holba’ Pisachi’ Native Film Festival at the Chickasaw Cultural Center, but also sent us all the way to New Mexico for the SWAIA - Santa Fe Indian Market! Of course, we always return to our roots at The Chickasaw Nation Annual Meeting and Festival in the fall.

But the best part of everything we get to do is meeting friends, family and fans along the way! Thank you all for being a big part of such an awesome year, and we look forward to seeing what 2020 has in store!

The Chickasaw Nation

The Chickasaw Nation continues to share its unique culture, traditions and celebrated history with the release of the Chickasaw Heritage Series curriculum. The curriculum corresponds with documentaries produced by Chickasaw Nation Productions, including “First Encounter;” “Pearl Carter Scott: On Top of the World;” and “Bearer of the Morning: The Life of Te Ata Thompson Fisher.”

Chickasaw historians, researchers, archaeologists, tribal elders and other educators contributed to create a teaching plan that tells the story of the Chickasaw people through their own words and experiences. Each lesson focuses on a specific event or individual throughout the Chickasaw Nation’s history and is complete with its own lesson plan, reading material, discussion questions, student activity, student quiz and reference for convenience.

#OnThisDay in 1540, our Chickasaw ancestors encountered Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. “First Encounter” tells the story of unconquered and unconquerable Chickasaw warriors and their first documented contact with Europeans.

Visit ChickasawFilms.com to learn more about “First Encounter.”

#ChickasawFilms #ChickasawProud

Nearly 500 years ago today, on Dec.14, 1540, the course of Chickasaw and world history changed forever when Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto’s party encountered our Chickasaw ancestors. This was our people’s first documented contact with Europeans. The ensuing conflict with de Soto in the winter of 1540-41 was a pivotal point in our history and set a standard for the persevering warrior spirit Chickasaws are still known for today.

The actions taken by Chickasaws during this encounter are portrayed in Chickasaw Nation Productions’ film “First Encounter.” This award-winning documentary is the first installment of the Chickasaw Heritage Series, a film initiative created to present transformative tribal history from a Chickasaw perspective and to connect diverse audiences to the story of the Chickasaw Nation.

Educational resources for teachers and educators to use in their classrooms have also been developed to accompany the film. This curriculum is aligned with the Oklahoma State Department of Education’s academic standards and is available for free download at Chickasaw.net/Curriculum.

Learn more about “First Encounter” and the Chickasaw Heritage Series at Chickasaw.net/FirstEncounter and Chickasaw.net/HeritageSeries.

This high-flying Chickasaw woman celebrates her 104th birthday today!

If you want to learn more about the youngest licensed pilot in U.S. history, grab a copy of Pearl the movie or fly on over to ChickasawFilms.com to learn more!#ChickasawFilms

#ChickasawProud #HappyBirthday

Trailblazing pilot Eula “Pearl” Carter Scott was born 104 years ago today, on Dec. 9, 1915, in Marlow, Oklahoma. After learning how to drive at the age of 12, Pearl learned to fly under the tutelage of Wiley Post at age 13, becoming the youngest licensed pilot in U.S. history. After a career as a stunt pilot, Pearl worked as a tribal community health representative and served three terms in the Chickasaw Nation Legislature where she played a vital role in the growth and history of the Chickasaw Nation.

Pearl received numerous state and national awards for her flight endeavors and life of service, including induction into the Chickasaw Hall of Fame, the International Women’s Air and Space Museum Hall of Fame and the Oklahoma Aviation and Space Hall of Fame. She is also a charter member of the National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian.

This portrait of Pearl, created by artist Christopher Nick, was unveiled at the Oklahoma Capitol in 2014 and is displayed in the House Lounge, immediately behind the formal Oklahoma House chamber. For further reading about Pearl Carter Scott’s life and legacy, visit the Chickasaw Hall of Fame website, HOF.Chickasaw.net.
