Rattling Pots & Kettles

A call to one or more retailers for a fixed length of time; i.e., 1 day, 30 days, etc., signals to the general public and the subject of the boycott that you lack conviction. An effective boycott requires the protest continue until the objective -- in the case of recently announced rollbacks to DEI initiatives -- a change in policy -- is attained. Otherwise, it's an empty gesture.

With the mounting heap of bad press Elon Musk is earning for himself and the negative impact it's having on his companies, are entrepreneurs and small business owners questioning 'consultants' recommending people become the public face of their brands?

If unsolicited, generic questions about your business venture seem scammy ('What products or services do you offer?"), it's because they probably are.

Paid ads -- a highly effective strategy for qualifying customers -- will help put an end to that.

Call For Organizers - The ZOOM-DB Radio

A Las Vegas-based digital radio station currently in beta testing announces opportunities for local patrons of Jazz, Blues, & Neo-Soul to develop its community media platform. For more information, send an e-mail with your contact info (full name, phone number) along with your area(s) of interest and 'The ZOOM' in the subject box to '[email protected]'. All queries will be kept confidential.

7 Things to Remember When Insisting on DIY Marketing

1) Clearly define your audience
2) pay attention to what your audience values
3) earn consumers' business; no company or organization is entitled to the public's support
4) budget for paid promotions -- you're going to get what you paid for
5) follow grammar and syntax rules
6) fully disclose info on the business; i.e., physical location (if applicable), phone number, web site/page URL, e-mail address, contact name, etc., in your messaging
7) avoid posting messages on social media in upper case.

It's illogical to ask businesses to post pics to business group pages but not permit the inclusion of links to web pages so consumers may find more info.

09/13/2024

When establishing a business page on social media, make every effort to respond to DMs, e-mails, and phone inquiries. Include hyperlinks to web pages and contact information (company name, phone, contact name, address) whenever possible. Otherwise, all the promos, etc., will go to waste.

All things considered, it's wiser (meaning less risky and more likely to be successful) for most of us concerned with wealth building to start by investing while maintaining our day jobs.

Promotions Versus Advertising

Promotions and advertising aren't exactly the same thing. Each has a distinct purpose -- promotions are free and paid messaging intended to push short-term (or immediate) sales; advertising is paid messaging best suited for developing brand identity and increasing sales over time.

A sound plan includes both activities. Drop your e-mail in the comments for more information on how The Innovation Centre At WOOK can develop a plan for your business venture.

In order for your word-of-mouth promotions to have a decent shot at success, (politely) ask your current customers & clients for referrals, rather than random strangers on social media.

I remain disappointed by recording artists and others in the music business who've taken to shamemongering the public into buying CDs or vinyl, but are silent as church mice on digital downloads.

Bad Business Practices - Non-disclosure

As seen on recent post from an administrator of DMV Black Owned Businesses Facebook group:

"I help clients with _________
(Don’t post links, it will be deleted)".

The aforementioned FB group states it is a place for 'Black-owned' business to promote themselves, so a message from an admin deterring members from posting links to their web pages is a particularly egregious considering the business soliciting information from members is not disclosed.

When presented with the apparent contradiction between the group's purpose and the message warning against posting links, the admin responded they want the group to be about more than posting links (it isn't, but that's a topic for another day). The Innovation Centre At WOOK fully supports the admin's goal of furthering, expanding, etc., dialog among business owners while discouraging spam.

However, the importance of disclosure and transparency was lost on the admin -- a deeply problematic reaction coming from an African-American business owner or consultant given the low levels of public confidence and high levels of mistrust within Af-Am communities.

Transparency and disclosures are as vital to healthy B2B transactions as they are B2C transactions, and it's incumbent upon business owners and entrepreneurs to uphold these and other good business practices on principle.

Many business networking events should be understood as expositions, meet n' greets, or virtual business districts. It's the relationships that differentiate these gatherings from true networking.

A business network usually involves an equal exchange (or, sharing) of resources among a group primarily composed of entrepreneurs and companies to further each other's interests. Examples of business networks include chambers of commerce, community development corporations, and local BNI chapters.

Individual members of business networks customarily pays fees to sustain the network as they grant privileges to other members of the network; i.e., discounted pricing, credit, etc.. The network can leverage its collective resources to secure advertising, capital, and additional resources on behalf of all its members.

Business networks can be very effective at stimulating economic growth within a community, as well as improving its quality of life. It's not uncommon for business networks to invest in their communities by organizing fundraisers for charity, sponsoring local arts and entertainment programming, and coordinating neighborhood watches.
