DNR has spring openings for hunter education

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says there are plenty of springtime openings for hunter education courses, which are required for nearly everyone buying a hunting license in the state.

The only exceptions are for children under age 10 who have a mentored youth hunting license and those older than 10 with an apprentice hunting license.

Michigan has three types of hunter education courses — traditional classroom, home-study and online. They’re held all year. But the DNR says April, May, August and September are usually the months when they’re most available.

Sgt. Jon Wood is the DNR’s hunter education program supervisor. He says people who wait until the last minute before the fall deer hunt sometimes have trouble finding a class or instructor.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Hunters may now begin applying for the 2014 Pure Michigan Hunt drawing.

The drawings have been held annually since 2009. Three winners are chosen each year. Each receives a license for elk, bear, spring and fall turkey and antlerless deer hunting. They also get first pick at a hunting spot on opening morning at any managed waterfowl area.

Businesses and organizations that sponsor the event give additional prizes such as fi****ms, crossbows, camouflage clothing and pop-up blinds.

Pure Michigan Hunt applications can be purchased for $4 anywhere hunting licenses are sold. They’re also available online at http://www.mdnr-elicense.com, under the miscellaneous tab, item number 300.

Applicants must provide a driver’s license number and birth date. Each application that people buy helps fund wildlife habitat restoration and improvement programs.

Every once in a while, I'll run into an avid outdoorsman who has never tried his hand at calling in a spring gobbler. The conversation starts like this: "Hey Oak, I'd like to try my hand at calling in a spring gobbler. Maybe we can go out some time, and you can show me?"
