The Gateway Seed family mourns the loss of Gerard Paul “Marter” Essner, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and farmer from New Hamburg.

Gerard’s life was rooted in faith, family, and service. A proud U.S. Army veteran and lifelong member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, he devoted his time to his community, his church, and the land he loved to farm alongside his father and son. His kindness, humor, and willingness to lend a helping hand touched countless lives.

Our hearts are with the Essner family — especially Abby, Charlee and Dawson Mayo, cherished members of our Gateway Seed family - during this difficult time.

Gerard’s legacy of love, laughter, and hard work will forever be remembered by all who knew him.

Gerard “Marter” Essner, 62, of New Hamburg, Army veteran and devoted family man, passed away Oct. 6, 2025. Services will be held Oct. 12 and 13 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church.
