Northampton County celebrates Liberation Day

Northampton County’s third annual Liberation Day event was held on Saturday, May 30 at the Creecy Community Center in Rich Square. Festivities kicked off that morning with a parade, followed by several presentations and performances. The event committee presented scholarships to 10 local students. Three elderly residents – Ruth Langford Buffaloe (age 88), Eddie “Jack” Buffaloe, Sr. (age 94), and Bernice Carter (age 93) – were honored as this year’s “Golden Jewels.” Musical performances were provided by the Weldon High School Marching Band. There were also craft and informational vendors along with several food trucks. First approved by the Northampton County Board of Commissioners in 2020, Liberation Day is a county holiday that celebrates the anniversary of the date (July 10, 1865) a Union army soldier made a public declaration of freedom for local enslaved people.
