On August 16, 1977, we lost Elvis. This was before Linda and I were officially dating, but we worked together at Bi-Lo, which played music and the news from a local radio station. We were all in a daze the rest of the week. Elvis had been bigger than life from before we were born, and he was still doing concerts. Totally unreal. --SLH

The CD era officially began! 💿

On August 17, 1982, the world’s first mass production of commercial Compact Discs (CDs) officially began at a PolyGram factory in Langenhagen, near Hanover, West Germany.

And the first pop album manufactured for commercial release at the plant?

ABBA — The Visitors

Released in 1981, The Visitors made history by becoming the first pop music album to be manufactured on CD. Pretty incredible considering how CDs would go on to completely change the way we listened to music! 📀

🎹 A classical recording of pianist Claudio Arrau performing Chopin waltzes was also among the recordings pressed during the factory’s initial production runs.

From vinyl and cassettes to CDs… and eventually streaming, music technology has come a LONG way!
