As all but the most close-minded of the punk brigade quickly learned, stagnation was hardly the way forward. The amphetamine blast of 1976 soon gave way to new roads at every turn. As the Pistols imploded, out came Public Image Limited, a far more adventurous, if less tabloid-worthy adventure. The Damned hired Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason to produce their second album (originally hoping they could corral the lost Syd Barrett), Siouxsie & the Banshees modified their howl into psychedelic pop and goth bravado, while Talking Heads and Blondie were off on their own musical adventures miles away from CBGB.

A band initially inspired by witnessing the S*x Pistols early on, Warsaw would eventually go on to form two of the most influential and highly regarded bands of the post-punk world: Joy Division and New Order. Demos were recorded and rejected as the band tried to find its sound. Aligning with the fledgling Factory Records and producer Martin Hannett, the band did just that.

Recorded in the spring of 1979, Unknown Pleasures was the debut album from Joy Division, and all these years later, nothing else sounds or feels quite like that album. Over the album’s ten tracks, we are taken on a ride that is at times uneasy and, at other times, pure comfort zone. Yes, there are influences ranging from Bowie and Iggy to the Doors and some of the darker art rock bands, but the style they arrived at was utterly unique.

The LP is full of now-classic songs that are very much of their time and yet still sound fresh and otherworldly nearly five decades on. When I hear the opening of “She’s Lost Control” or “Shadowplay,” I am instantly transported to first hearing the album when it was new. It holds a lot of weight and has influenced countless artists since then.

If you’re not familiar with it, you should be. So, tune in Thursday, Sept. 3, as we feature it throughout the day as an Essential Listen. - Dave Swanson

Everyone has that one person.

The one who believed in you before you believed in yourself. Who gave you a shot when you weren't sure you'd earned it yet. Who saw something in you and decided to bet on it anyway.

For so many of us here at The Summit FM, that person was Bill Gruber.

For thirty years, Bill was our program director, but honestly, "program director" doesn't cover it. He shaped careers. He shaped people. He gave chances that turned into callings — and the impact he had on this station and the people who walked through its doors was so profound, we named our building after him.

You'll find him smiling down from a full-scale hand-drawn picture on our mural in Studio C — and pictured here with our General Manager, Tommy Bruno, at the Prop & Pistons Airshow.

Not everyone gets a building named after them. But everyone deserves to be thanked.

So today, we're asking you: Who's the Bill Gruber in your life? The person who gave you your shot, believed in you, changed your trajectory?

You don't need to name a building after them. A comment will do. Tag them, tell us their name, tell us what they did — And if you want to shout them out with a song — go for it. We just might play it for them.
