SKA AGAINST RACISM came out 6 years ago today, in collaboration with asian man records and Ska Punk Daily . While the world was in utter chaos we tried to join together and do just a little bit of good, and at a minimum make a statement from the ska community in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The week this came out, between bandcamp digital sales and the instantly sold out pressing of 1,500 records, we were able to donate over $70,000 to various BLM organizations, the Alpha institute, and the NAACP legal defense fund. Forever grateful for how the community stepped up in that moment, and to the bands who contributed their music.
You can still get this comp on bandcamp for as a little as $1. Today is bandcamp Friday where no fees are taken out, so it’s a great time to do that. Every year since the record has come out I have chosen a different group to donate the digital proceeds, and this year 100% of the proceeds will go to Alpha Institute-Alpha Boys School - one of the foundational institutions of ska music, that has fostered some of the genres most defining and legendary artists, including Tommy McCook, Don Drummond, Rico Rodriguez and a ton of others.
I’ve also got a copy of the vinyl in the BTR store in New Paltz. It’s priced high, but the money will also go to the Alpha Institute. Feel free to come check it out when it opens on 9/19. Thanks for listening ✌️🏁
