Meet Nkan — a Nigerian-born Afro-fusion artist based in California, whose music bridges continents, cultures, and stories.

In our Tradition Café interview, Nkan shares her journey from Nigeria to Oakland and how music became a bridge between culture, community, and belonging.

Catch Nkan as a headlining performer at Unity Fest, a free, family-friendly festival presented by Rhythmix Cultural Works and the City of Alameda as part of the Rhythmix in the Parks series. The event takes place Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 12–5 PM at Chochenyo Park in Alameda, celebrating the arts and performing traditions of Africa and the African Diaspora with music, dance, drumming, hands-on arts activities, food, and community.

I’m excited to welcome Lena Torrey to the Tradition Café team!

Lena is a Digital Media student at San Joaquin Delta College and will be helping with graphic design, social media, and a variety of creative projects behind the scenes. As Tradition Café continues to grow, I’m proud to have her join us on this journey.

One of my favorite things about Tradition Café is creating opportunities for collaboration, learning, and community. I can’t wait to see the creativity, talent, and fresh perspective Lena brings to the table.

Some exciting Tradition Café news ☕✨

I’m teaming up with Rhythmix Cultural Works as an interviewer for Unity Fest 2026, and I am so looking forward to these conversations.

Unity Fest is a free, family-friendly celebration of the arts, culture, and performing traditions of Africa and the African Diaspora — with music, dance, drumming, food, hands-on art, youth activities, and a whole lot of community joy.

And honestly? This is the kind of thing that makes my Tradition Café heart very happy.

These interviews are about more than event promo. They’re about listening to artists, culture keepers, and creative voices talk about where their work comes from, what it carries, and how tradition keeps moving through community.
