Part 1 of the rest of our lives (for now): Moving into our Honda Element and driving it to a Mexican island in the Caribbean. After more than 8 months of getting our car and ourselves kinda ready for this, we finally left Wisconsin and headed south. Luckily for us, we left in the middle of historically freezing temps along our route and an ice storm about to hit Texas, forcing us to get hotels instead of camping! This was not how we expected to start our adventure, but by now we’ve learned it’s better to have no expectations when living the lives of permanent vagabonds. Wanna see more? I may have went down a toaster rabbit hole on the clock app and came back with some perfect memes. Do people post memes on reels or should I keep this content quarantined to “over there”?

I was too lazy to cover the visors in the same fabric as the headliner and I’ve been regretting it for 10k miles. (-Shoshi) (but I also have the fabric with us so my only excuse now is adhd. but lowkey if anyone has any suggestions for how to best accomplish this task lmk because my adhd has decided it’s too hard)
(also btw I’m not a giant; Lucas built a stool for the passenger footwell. lmk if you wanna tour of my passenger princess setup in a coming post)

Spent a night sleeping on the side of the road on the outskirts of El Paso, just in front of Hueco Tanks state park. and have been 2 apps which have proven to be invaluable while living out of our Honda Element. We were even able to use IOverlander throughout Mexico and it made finding hidden gems and safe spots to camp a breeze. Also really appreciated knowing where roadblocks were located so we could mentally prepare.

If you’re traveling in a van, you can just pull over & sleep anywhere with zero setup or major worries about weather & security. In a Honda Element camper top, things aren’t so simple. This rig is anything but low-profile. There’s no security (in the camper top) except the weapons we keep on us (we’re literally just in a tent). The set-up and tear down for one night, with a rooftop box, is a pain in the ass. And it’s S**T in any weather. The thing is not waterproof in any meaningful capacity, and is dangerous to be in when it’s lightning. I could go on, but I’ll leave further criticism about the “ecamper” for another post.

After almost a year of traveling and basing ourselves out of our car, there are so many things we’d do differently had we known what we do now. But the chaos is all part of the journey, and every day we’re thinking of ways to improve our setup. In the meantime… to other overlanders and van lifers: please keep reviewing places on the apps! You have no idea when you could be making someone’s day, making them feel safer to boondock in the middle of nowehere.

Our first night camping out of our Element in the pop-up camper was in the coolest parking lot ever: on top of the biggest pyramid in the world, the Great Pyramid of Cholula, which dates back to 3BCE.

At the very top of this pyramid is the Santuario de la Virgen de los Remedios, a church built beginning in the 1500s by Spanish conquistadors, to symbolize the dominance of Catholicism over indigenous beliefs. Not so cool.

We LOVED camping here, but the cohetes being lit off from dawn until 1am to celebrate saints or banish the devil (it differs depending on who you talk to), was awful for Ziggy.

Rolled into Palenque, threw on the emergency brake, and went chasing waterfalls.
