Kai Kaldro - “His Girl Friday the 13th” (Dir. Kai Kaldro)
Genre: Industrial Metal
Music Video

The third entry in Kai Kaldro’s industrial metal odyssey saw us further digging in to and refining the style that has become a benchmark for the series, with a focus on high contrast, very colorful frames that are pushed far but then dialed back in post to the give the image a sort of retro washed out look that really emphasizes the style at hand. Like the last two, this one was shot entirely in a day even though the length of this one is substantially longer than the previous ones. While it proved challenging on set, the feeling of accomplishment of pulling off so much in a single day was much higher than the others and the final product that came out of it is something we’re all proud of.

“Switchback” - Dir. Lori Bailey
Genre: Drama/Period
Feature

When lighting and framing the two largest inspirations I pulled from were Killers of the Flower Moon and Cold Mountain. I wanted all light to feel like it was coming from one source, very rarely sometimes 2 to give things as naturalistic a feel as possible and for the framing to feel like a more classically made movie. Special thanks to for the camera rental and to for the lens and lighting package.

Sly Fox and the Hustlers - “The Witch” (Dir. Sly Fox)
Genre: Blues Rock
Music Video

Keeping the cinematography work posts going strong this month! The music video for Sly Fox and the Hustlers song “The Witch” is one of the most recent things I shot. I was recommended to Sly only a few days before shooting and we had a completed video less than a few days after, which is always a really amazing feeling because there are times where you can wait years for a project to be finished. Sly had a lot of really fun ideas and a very solid vision going in to the project, it made for an incredibly smooth workflow that had space for improvisation and was one of those jobs that felt like the old days of getting together with friends to make something which is by far my favorite way of going about a project.

“Wherever We Go” - Dir. Heather & Hunter Frederick
Genre: Drama / Comedy / Coming of Age
Short Film

This project was my second time working with co-directors on a film (I’ve since done so a few more times) and was one of the most streamlined projects I’ve worked on as a DP even with such a small crew (Big shoutout to Ember for that!). The largest problem we faced was a constantly shifting sun making nearly every shot we filmed outside look completely different from the last, but our excellent colorist Taylor Jarvis did an absolutely stellar job of making it seem like that wasn’t an issue at all in the final product. Lastly, the Frederick twins did a fantastic job serving a trio of roles as co-directors, co-producers, and co-stars and made the monumental task of wearing that many hats look like a walk in the park.

JUSS-1 - “Prisoners of Moments” (Dir. Joe Geitl)
Genre: Rap
Music Video

One of the most collaborative projects I’ve ever worked on, the “Prisoners of Moments” music video was one of the largest labors of love I’ve undertaken in the music video space and was incredibly rewarding to finally get out in front of people. The biggest starting point for the video was Jim Jarmusch’s film “Down by Law”, a very low key plainly presented prison drama comedy that’s simply framed and focuses heavily on a small handful of characters as well as the stillness in details from movies by Robert Bresson. We wanted to give a little more life to this video though which resulted in a lot of the Dolly shots present, pulling inspiration from shots in films by directors like Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese. We shot a lot more footage than we ended up using, with a lot of improvised moments that ended up in the final product and it put us in a place where we had an immense amount of freedom in the editing room to craft comedic beats and cool shots that give it a real light heartedness and energy.
